Blackburn striker Andy Kennedy was in the form of his life, scoring five goals in just three Division Two matches at the start of November. This included a double against his future club, Brighton, which was enough to give Rovers three points in a 2-1 win at Ewood Park. This lifted the Lancashire club to second in the division. Alan Curbishley scored for the newly-promoted Seagulls through a penalty.In the return fixture at the start of March, Barry Lloyd’s Albion side turned the tables with a surprisingly emphatic 3-0 victory at the Goldstone Ground. Garry Nelson scored twice while Kevin Bremner also got on the scoresheet to keep the club in 20th position. By the end of the season, the Seagulls finished 19th, safe from the relegation trapdoor. As for Blackburn, it was heartache. They finished fifth for the second successive season and lost in the Play-off Final to Crystal Palace, 4-3 over two legs.

February: The Seagulls record only one win in the month, a 1-0 victory over Watford, thanks to another Bremner goal.
March: Five penalties are awarded by referee Kelvin Morton in a famous match with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
April: Brighton beat promotion-chasing Manchester City 2-1 at the Goldstone, thanks to an improbable own goal by Ian Brightwell.
May: After a 2-2 draw at Stoke, Barry Lloyd’s side finish the season ten points clear of the relegation zone, a superb achievement after a poor start.
