Blackburn striker Andy Kennedy was in the form of his life, scoring five goals in just three Division Two matches at the start of November. This included a double against his future club, Brighton, which was enough to give Rovers three points in a 2-1 win at Ewood Park. This lifted the Lancashire club to second in the division. Alan Curbishley scored for the newly-promoted Seagulls through a penalty. In the return fixture at the start of March, Barry Lloyd’s Albion side turned the tables with a surprisingly emphatic 3-0 victory at the Goldstone Ground. Garry Nelson scored twice while Kevin Bremner also got on the scoresheet to keep the club in 20th position. By the end of the season, the Seagulls finished 19th, safe from the relegation trapdoor. As for Blackburn, it was heartache. They finished fifth for the second successive season and lost in the Play-off Final to Crystal Palace, 4-3 over two legs.
