Brighton & Hove Albion women captain Jay Blackie is expecting a battle when Plymouth Argyle visit the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre today, but remains confident that the team can maintain their position at the top of the Premier League.The Seagulls returned to the summit with a narrow 1-0 win over Lewes last Sunday, and Blackie feels Albion - with no margin for error in the title race - cannot afford to underestimate their West Country opponents, who need the points for different reasons.
She told seagulls.co.uk, “We’re just going to treat it in the same way as all the other games, as anyone can beat anyone on their day in this league.
*“I missed the last game due to injury, but we ended up winning 5-0 and played really well. It was one of those games where everything started to click, even though the pitch wasn’t the best surface to play on.
“They are going to come here and make it a dogfight. They want to stay in this league and no team wants to come up and get relegated straight away.
“It’s going to be a tough game, but we just need to concentrate on ourselves and what we’ve done in training in order to get a result.”

Albion should have no such problems with the playing surface on this occasion, with the game set to be played on a 4G surface, and Blackie believes this can only benefit the team.“We’ve done double sessions during the day on a Tuesday and Thursday at the training ground for the last two weeks. It’s allowed everything to be so much more professional and has allowed us to have an extra two hours of training a week together.
“We all love playing there as well because the pitches are immaculate and when you try to play football, it always helps when you don’t have to worry about your first touch.
“Sometimes when you play on bobbly pitches you can end up playing too slowly. Psychologically, we know that we’ve trained on it and are going to enjoy playing a game there as well.”
