Brighton & Hove Albion women’s midfielder Kirsty Barton is aiming to create more happy memories in the Sussex Challenge Cup, as the side prepare to take on Wivelsfield Green on Sunday.Barton scored a superb long-range strike in a 2-0 victory over Lewes in the 2013 final and she is eager to reclaim the trophy.
She told seagulls.co.uk, “Since I’ve joined Brighton, we’ve won the competition every year apart from last season when we lost [3-0] in the final to Chichester.
“Everyone loves the cup final; you always get that buzz from a night game and the overall occasion.
“That game against Lewes was great. There was a large crowd and I’ll never forget scoring the opening goal as we went on to win.
“Hopefully we can win it back this year, as it’s always important to win a trophy.”

The 22-year-old admits that she knows little about Albion’s first round opponents, Wivelsfield, a team that plays four tiers below the Seagulls in the women’s football pyramid.“To be honest I don’t know what to expect, but we won’t underestimate them. We’ll treat it just like any other game and aim to hit our targets no matter who we are playing against.
“We approach every game in the same mindset in order to go out and do the same job each time.”
The midfielder is also enjoying her football under James Marrs and feels that he is helping her to improve as a player.
“I’ve learned a lot off James since he came in this season. I’ve played a different game to what I’m used to and it’s helping to develop me as a player.
“The good thing is that I still feel like I’ve got so much to learn and I’m continually improving.”
