Brighton & Hove Albion’s 2-2 draw at Bolton Wanderers means the Seagulls have made their best start to a season since 1953/54 - and remained unbeaten in their first nine league games for the first time in the club’s history.That will be a crumb comfort to Chris Hughton and the Seagulls squad as they journey back from Bolton tonight, as they felt a contentious refereeing decision denied them what would have been an all-time record start in either the Southern League or Football League.

The Seagulls kicked off the 1953/54 campaign with seven wins and one draw in their first eight matches - but lost in their ninth, and Albion have never before begun a season without defeat in the first nine matches.
In 1977/78, Albion started with six wins and two draws in their first eight league games - but lost in the ninth.
The start this season leaves Albion four points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough, who face Leeds tomorrow, and six clear of Reading in third.
