Only ask, because I went there yesterday (with Hull City friends, cracking game, won by Hull 2-1, goal in the last minute). I have come to the conclusion that Barnsley is the wierdest place I've ever watched football before

I know the town was decimated with the closure of the mines in the 80s, but its got a real wierd, going-back-in-time-feeling about the place.....and I don't mean because its in Yorkshire, because I lived in the county between 1999-2001 and had a cracking time up there

Everything about the place (apart from the very cheap booze in the pub) was a bit spooky and I won't be going back there in a hurry

Anyone else think Barnsley is the town that England forgot, or is it just me?!!

I went there a few years back for a midweek game (barnsley v millwall) as I was in Yorkshire for a business trip.

It started weirdly when my colleague was twatted by a total stranger within minutes of parking of the car; this was at 5.00.

It was a cracking game but freezing. We came out and we're staggered to find loads of women wearing short skirts and blouses - we were wrapped in thick coats and shivering. They're a different race up there.

Totally agree! The only time I've been there was about 4 years ago - we were up there for York v Albion and a Yorkshire holiday. Personally, I find South Yorkshire a total shithole and completely out of character with the rest of Yorkshire.

I went there in 1985? I think for a FA cup match, can't remember much about the place other than it was really wet and muddy outside the away end before the game, then after it had finished the ground was frozen.

I think we lost 2-0. Was a forgettable place obviously

When I lived up north I went several times over a few years. It was weird how they transformed the stadium from one with terraces all the way round to a fairly decent ground. Was done relatively quickly I seem to remember. What a pity we couldn't have done that with the Goldstone

It is still stuck in a time warp. The mines form a strange backdrop and a constant reminder of the industrial past of the area. It is indeed very odd.

i totally agree barnsley is in a different world to anybody else. and rotherham is another shithole. but there is nothing wrong with doncaster, sheffield or even chesterfield. york is not s.yorks but is a decent place anyway.
born and bred in doncaster and i love it. you will find that most of the north is pretty much the same whether you are in yorks, lancs or even further up in the north east, or even liverpool. thing is we are northerners and have had to live in industrial towns, the mines and pits and other big industries brought all the communitys closer together. particually during the pit strikes. but despite the strikes etc the strangest place in the world would have to be goole. do you know they have webbed feet there. ;)

Ned is from Rotherham. I've just asked him what he thinks of Barnsley.

His answer? 'Not a great deal, it's a grotty place'.

It does have a feeling all of its own and not a pleasant one either.

Not so sure about Goole graz but Hull is a totally different place to the rest of Yorkshire. Their accent is distinctly different too.

When we drove in the minibus on the motorway past Goole everyone bar me started slagging off the place, saying it was full of inbreds and smackheads :(

Hull's alrite, never had a bad day/night out there and I've been going since 1993.....gets a bad press, but I think mainly from people who've never been there or haven't been there recently.....plus its got a cracking football ground (and a ****** for an MP :nono: )

I was there in February.

I had to deal with customers in Hull whilst working for the electricity board.

They cannot pronounce the letter I. When reading out their account numbers 559 would sound like farve farve narn.

Two of the country's biggest council estates Bransholme and Orchard Park Estate contributed a lot to Hulls reputation.

Again whilst working for the electricity company I had to send one of our meter guys to override a token meter (similar to a key meter) so that the police could do forensics on a flat where a prostitute had been murdered.

The football ground is a very recent addition and only made possible because the council sold the telephone company they owned.

totally agree with all of that. hull people do seem a little strange. but they are friendly enough and it is a good night out. most of my family come from hull. i could not have described goole better myself. (inbreds, smackheads).

the pronunciation of any vowels comes very hard to hull's folk. and bransholme, orchard park are horrible areas. most towns or citys have these type of areas though, even if they are not as bad as these 2.

Or on the same scale. Just how big are those 2 council estates?!!

Driving through Bransholme about 18 months ago, and the cabby pointed out some flats that were up for sale for £50, I kid you not!!!! (and I had this price verified by my mates!!)

But then again, would anyone choose to live on Bransholme.................:nono:

Barnsley does have it's fair share of celebraties though.

Geoff Boycott is from Fitzwilliam, Brian Blessed from Wath and Brian Glover from Barnsley itself as is Michael Parkinson.

Having lived in Barnsley for 17 years I feel qualified to comment on this. Barnsley is indeed still only just living in the 20th century. It is full of small minded, discriminating inbreds! There are still people who won't speak to my kids' dad, simply because he 'allowed' me to go back to work after I had my first baby, and that was 12 years ago.

I came to hate the place & am so happy to have moved
