People live where they do for a variety of reasons. I'm sure we can all make helpful decisions but ultimately Will will decide according to a) cost, b) closeness to work c) features of the neighbourhood.

We all have our own personal preferences: I prefer the south to the north because it's cheaper and you can get more for your money but others would happily trade a smaller place for a better neighbourhood. Closeness to work had no influence on me, but the number of cheap and good curry places in Tooting (and the lido) did; again it's personal preference, someone else might opt for more bars or clubs, someone else for regular drug dealers in the neighbourhood, someone else for good sports facilities, someone with kids might choose a good school.

We can offer as many suggestions as we like, but it's really what Will wants that counts.

Just don't move to Reading :)

I was fortunate enough to acquire a flat in SW11 (Battersea), which to me is a lovely area, with Wandsworth Common on the doorstep and the station close by with direct trains to East Grinstead. Got a great main street (Northcote Road), with some fabulous restaurants (Dwayne will probably echo that). Only problem is young banking families moved in when prices got too high for them in Chelsea and so house prices went up here. Also, it is a good idea to like labradors as there are quite a few of them. Not too many decent pubs, mostly bars attracting professionals, also the street market does not have as much as it did, though there are some good food shops.

I would echo what others said about SE16. Surrey Quays is quite a nice area, with lots of different types of housing, though it can seem like a family housing estate and the pubs tend to be of the theme type. Got a vast Tescos with free parking, and good tube connections. The area Lord Bracknell means to avoid is the Blue and I would agree best to avoid it. SE 16 is close to SE1. I worked there for a Christian mission for a year and a half and came to love the area (I work in SW1 now and miss SE1), which I think is one of the nicest in London, even if it seems rough when you first see it. Some great pubs (Anchor Tap in Shad Thames, Hornimans at Hays Galleria), the river walk and the park by Tower Bridge. Borough Market is good for food, Hays Galleria for shopping and London Bridge has direct trains back to Sussex. Don't even think of trying to buy here. Most of the housing is council and you will pay a huge sum for very small flats.

If you don't mind suburbia, I would try somewhere like Surbiton or Kingston. They have the same atmosphere as Battersea, Wimbledon and so on, you should find cheaper housing and they are only a short trip from central London.

I'm going to have a room free at the end of Sept - SW16 - might be able to help you out even if just for a month.
