The religious nuts in the US (and not all religious people are nuts by any means) intend to show a "documentary" that basically portrays George W. Bush as being appointed by god and therefore any criticism of him is heresy.

After reading the comments on the link I don't know whether to laugh or crawl under my desk and shake with fear

George Bush is a reliable, peace-loving genius compared to former president Ronald Reagan. In all seriousness, he believed that the fact he had his finger on the button was part of God's plan for the end of the world. We are extremely lucky to have survived his presidency. This was all based on a complete misunderstanding of what the book of Revelation is all about.

Bush is as much of a believer in the "end of times" as Reagan was. These people want to bring about the end of the world because they believe that will trigger the second coming.

I'm not so sure that is right. Bush is a United Methodist, and they are generally less fundamentalist than many. That said, he is from Texas...

It's obviously very difficult to decide between the candidates.

But he does also describe himself as "born again"

I think GWB's Christianity is pretty much typical American, but not Fundamentalist. There's not much difference between him and Kerry with regard to that (or much else, to be honest), as being seen as un-Christian is a sure-fire vote loser in the USA.

I personally think that GWB reflects the views held by a sizable part of the USA, the coalition of the 'small-town Texas' viewpoint, and that of the very rich. The truth is that while there are many very cosmopolitan cities in the US, they do not make up the majority of the population, and the presidential candidates will not win if they go after their vote exclusively.

BTw, can't believe I'm actually defending GWB here. None of this detracts or adds to the fact that he is a completely useless goon.

He said god told him to invade Iraq!!

GWB is indeed a Methodist (though brought up an Episcopalian). However, he is almost entirely surrounded by members of the Southern Baptist Convention (including Cheney). They are the lot that believe Jerusalem must remain in Jewish hands, otherwise the second coming of Christ is not possible.

John Kerry is Catholic, of course. You are right, though - so much of this is aimed at winning votes, or rather, not losing votes.

That is true. They are also the lot that boycotted Disneyworld, and that is really scary!

(Episcopalian being Church of England to those that are unfamiliar with the term.)
