NSC Ryder Cup had an effect on my own golfing skills!

I'm a bit of a hacker who plays about 5 or 6 times a year. Inspired by my dice throwing antics, I headed off to Ashford yesterday to have 18 holes at Homelands Better Golf Centre - a 9 hole course designed for beginner to intermediate players. It's very short at 4370 yards with a par of 64.

In the past, I've probably broken 100 about 5 or 6 times with a lowest of 95 or so - admittedly on longer and more challenging courses. My last effort was 102 on the Woodlands course in Bristol.

Yesterday, my front 9 was a bit hit and miss - a ropey start going 6 6 5. I then hit an 8 iron to within 8 feet at the next hole, a 138 yard par 3 and just missed the putt for a 2. I managed 2 more pars and a couple of nasty 6's going out in 43 - still a respectable score for me.

Than, on the back 9, something strange happened - I started playing golf properly! A 5 and a 4 put me +2 gross for the first 2 holes - not too shabby. Then, a 40 foot putt from off the green for a birdie 3 kickstarted me. On the par 3 13th, the same one I had put the ball 8 feet away first time around, I seemed to put the ball in it's old indentation. Learning from my first putt, I rolled it in for a second consecutive birdie. This put me at level par gross for 4 holes.

To cut a long story short, I finished the back 9 in 35, 3 over par for 9 holes. A missed put on the 18th from 3 or 4 feet meant it should have been a 34.

So, for a player who had never broken 90 before for 18 holes, I ended up with a round of 78! :clap2: :clap2: And I was playing on my own so no one saw it. :nono:

I'm off to Battle Golf Club for 9 holes a bit later this morning to see if it was a fluke or not. I'll probably card 50 and give the game up for another 6 months. Strange game, golf.
