Seeing as how we are now getting the remains of Charley (I think, could be the one before that) with the strong winds, rain then sun then rain then sun etc etc I thought i'd bring you upto date with the Nasty Ivan:

Updated 14 September 2004

As Ivan surges on into the Gulf of Mexico it remains a potent force. It is still registering as a category 5 hurricane on the Saffir/Simpson scale, but is forecast to weaken slightly during the next 24 hours. A Hurricane Watch remains in force from Louisiana to northern Florida with landfall still expected in the early hours of Thursday.

Did we ever sort out which way these hurricanes were spinning ? I take it Ivan formed in the southern hemsiphere, and from that photo, it appears to be spinning anti-clockwise (I am assuming that the cloud formations are drawn in towards the eye, rather than spewed out).

I know how hurricanes are formed, you know. I don't even need to look it up any more.

Ivan is quite blatantly spinning Anti-Clockwise, otherwise the "arms" pretruding from the main central area would get caught up on land and you'll end up with a "Star Effect" Hurricance which are pure Myth.

I would'nt say the Eye is sucking in the clouds, more than keeping the force at a distance whilst remaing clam right in the centre, if the centre were to Collapse ala as a Star would then the Hurricane would Implode on itself and dicipate and gradually wear down and disintigrate completley, leaving just random storm clouds hovering about looking for a direction to take, and with the warm sea heat rising the direction would be Upwards. In a rare instance that storm could in effect become another hurricane by dragging the cold air down and meeting the warm air halfway...and we'd be back to square one.

Crabbers, you have excelled yourself there. A highly technical explanation in laymans terms. Even if you have just looked it up, you've still interpreted the information and have illustrated a good understanding of the underlying meteological theories.

Good work fella.

ACTUALLY all that came straight outta my head! Probably got some info in there from reading about Hurricanes in the past and just working from memory. Could also do the same for Tornados as I'm a big fan of them too!
