NSC Hosting Costs

Just read Bozza's "sticky" post with regard to hosting costs for NSC.

Being in a position of complete ignorance with regard to websites and hosting costs etc, it got me wondering what actually drives the level hosting cost?

Is it number of people viewing the site over a specific period?
Or the number of posts made over a spefic period?
Does posting pictures / attachments increase the charges etc?

Has the time come to request donations or even make NSC a subscription based site?

Is it number of people viewing the site over a specific period? - In theory yes, as they use up bandwidth.
Or the number of posts made over a spefic period? - Certainly if they are posting huge pictures of the AMEX/Naked ladies

People posting pictures would only cost NSC money if they were hosted on NSC directly, people hotlinking won't cost NSC bandwidth.

Actually, I'd say power, processing speed, admin costs, cost more to a hosting company than bandwidth nowadays

The above it true. We don't actually get charged for bandwidth really - the cost is processing, essentially the SQL queries that churn through the NSC database returning data to your browser to render the site.

Last month we had 3,800,000 pageviews - up by about 40% on the previous month.
