One of my regular walks from home in Shoreham is along the River Adur and then around New Monks Park which takes you to the rear of the training centre. After walking past the airport entrance, I walk along the 'new-ish' footpath that takes you behind the Gunnery Training Dome.

For some weeks, this footpath has been closed. Initially I thought maybe for maintenance or tree felling. A couple of weeks ago I took a closer look as I was intrigued that big boulders had been placed each side of the path at the entrance. I then discovered the reason for the closure ... see photos below ...

I wasn't sure who owned this bit, so I contacted my local district councillor (who is superb at helping out - even if it's not her area or responsibility). She suggested it was probably BHA as it was part of the New Monks Farm development and said she would email a contact she had. I walked along there again today. Nothing had been cleared. Of more concern to me than not being able to walk along the footpath was that fact that a river runs alongside it and I saw a swan and quite possibly a nest on the river bank. A lot of the rubbish is plastic bags, cans etc. - which could easily be blown into the river.

It's disappointing that nothing has been done to clear this area. They are certainly aware as I've also spoken with a chap who drives around the park area cutting the grass edges etc. He mentioned an issue with 'travellers' on one occasion and general fly tipping. He said it was too much for him to clear with his little golf cart type vehicle ... and the club was 'sorting it'. Well that was 10 days ago.

I've just emailed Paul Mullen highlighting the potential risk to local wildlife. Let's see if he responds in a similar fashion to another Paul.

I still don't understand what a bunch of monks have to so with a farm near the Amex and does Carla Homes know Shirley and her mate Laverne?

Does that include the park area? When I spoke with the chap who was tending to the park 10 days ago, he told me it was the club that were arranging clearance. My local councillor also thought that was the case?

This isn't where the houses are being built. And Paul Mullen is showing as a Director of New Monks Farm Development.

That is more than likely the council to be honest, check the boundaries of the development.
All the Albion (Lancing) own is fenced off for security reasons, everything outside is either the development or council.

That could be his response because he does not want to do it, or simply does not know who is responsible, he could be saying it to just shrug you off/
My local councillor also thought that was the case?
Yeah, we all know they love passing the buck.

That he might be, but they hand over responsibility of the build and all clearance issues to them, it will be in there package of tender.

He may well be able to jig things along though.

I’ve often wondered what this is. Some kind of WW2 defence thing?

It’s a regular walking route for me too. Over lancing ring and down into Shoreham past Lancing College.

A walk which is now marred by trying to navigate the roundabout and crossings on the A27.

And well done OP for reporting that mess. Disgraceful.

That might be the case with some councillors. The councillor I speak with - Joss Loader, an Independent on Shoreham Beach - is superb. She never passes the buck and generally knows her stuff. Even though it wasn't her responsibility, she emailed Paul Mullen. She's fantastic at getting back to her constituents and responds in no time whenever I contact her. She's a doer.

I've spend the last 20 minutes or so searching to see if I could find out anything more about ownership. Everything to do with New Monks Farm Development Ltd points back to the club with Paul Mullen and Robert Comer as Directors.

If it's not BHA then I would have hoped Paul would have at least responded to Joss - who emailed him in her capacity as an Adur District councillor - to nudge her in another direction.

So I'll leave it at that for 7/10 days and see what happens. The main issue though is that this section of the park area is an absolute disgrace and a hazard and needs clearing up - like now.

I have just received a reply from Paul Mullen. It's a short reply ... but a very prompt reply nevertheless.

Evening.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
We are very aware of the matter via local Councillors such as Mr Loader and I will provide an update for you as soon as possible.
Kind regards

Paul

Mr Loader is actually Ms Loader. But at least that demonstrates that my excellent local councillor has been in touch with him - even though it's not her remit.

Let's hope a positive update isn't too far away.

He’s probably waiting for sign off from Rob and Ryan to be fair

Off topic but councillor relevant ….had a leaflet through the door last week to inform that Nigel Jenner had passed away, he only got elected in my ward last year and wasn’t what I would call old..from talking to him you got the impression that he‘d helped so many people in his life …going to be a hard act to follow.

Yes, I saw the announcement. I never came across him myself but very sad.
