I saw this on a non-league club's website, and thought it might (or not) be of interest ???

It's about the now common sight of players taping up their socks to a lesser or greater degree, to hold their shin pads in place etc., and FIFA's decision to bring in a new law about it...

'stockings - if tape or similar material is applied
externally it must be the same colour as that part
of the stocking it is applied to...'

'REASON
An increasing number of players are using excessive amounts of tape externally on their socks. This can be a multitude
of colours and it completely changes the look of the sock. This can cause
confusion particularly for assistant referees who may need to look at the sock to determine who last played the ball
before it has gone out of play...'

I suppose it will give a more uniform look to all the players, if their socks all seem to be the same colour ???

Don't know how far down the pyramid this will go, as it might cause a few raised eyebrows on a Sunday morning down Buckingham Park

I seem to remember something about different coloured tape at the bottom of the shin pad somehow increasing the chances of injuriy, because it acted like a target, or it subconsciously led to players tackling higher because they though the leg ended sooner (I know that sounds weird, I mean where the sock colour stops, it is subconsciously thought the boot starts, which led to higher frequency of injuries).

It's in keeping with their undershort law. I was actually wondering recently whether that muscle tape that people were using a lot in euro2012 might soon be included in that law, too.

Out of interest I saw a few players covered in some kind of blue tape, Balotelli had it all over his back when he took his shirt off after scoring.

Whats it all about?

THANKFULLY very few refs at local football level enforce the undershort law - and rightly so IMO - I'd have to have about 4 diff pairs if they did as I swear by them! Can see why the tape laws been bought in. C.Ronaldo started the velcro wrap round things that many wear - it does completely change the look of the socks if it's a diff colour. Will prob be slack enforcing at park level tho...

The IFAB agreed that in relation to Law 4 – Players’ Equipment, the wearing of snoods should not be permitted. The Football Association of Wales’ proposal regarding Law 4 - Players’ Equipment was also approved. The IFAB agreed that the colour of undershorts or tights if worn, must be the same colour as the shorts.

The decisions concerning the Laws of the Game taken today by the International Football Association Board will come into effect on 1 July 2011.
