Wouldn't It be great If when one of our rising stars actually signs a contract and stays until the contract ends. They will sit with DK and DW all smiles and off they go when a club comes in. Im not blaming them just a bit gutting!

But hey hey there still here!

What like Dan Harding?

He would then be slated for seeing his contract out, to leave on a free. You can't have it both ways.

Yeah great one pick one young player who was a twat!

.....I dont want it both ways thank you very much but I wouldnt mind them staying until their contracts end..which wont happen!

I just hope we can afford to keep the team together. No more sales to keep afloat before Falmer!

I don't think there is a risk of any of them going this season - unless they actively want to, which with Wilkins in position is unlikely.

But presumably we remain financially precarious. Is the board going to be able to resist not selling a few of our rising starlets in the next couple of years?

Having said that, once we get the go-ahead for Falmer, am i right in thinking that the amount that will be loaned for the construction will include the costs of getting the planning permission in the first place?

That is, the financial situation will not be quite as dire because the directors will "get back" from the forthcoming loan the money they have so far spent on getting falmer through planning?

(can't remember the technical term for this!)

Exactly. Harding stayed until his contract ran out, then left, and was called a twat for doing so. The manner in which he went about it was a bit shit, like claiming not to have recieved the new contract offer from the club, etc, but he was perfectly entitled to walk away.

This is what you are hoping all our young players do? If Zamora, Virgo, etc had all gone down that route then the club would now be bankrupt.

I want our youth to stay and sign another contract my point was signing a contract for fifty years means nothing as they will leave anyway..loyalty has gone in football...the fact that youve looked into my reply too deeply because I didnt type what you felt was an adequat answer is not my fault.

....and anyway the club would not have been bankrupt..I dont believe that for one minute!

That's the modern game though. With freedom of contract the days are long gone when the Chairman or Manager could announce that "So-and-so will leave this club over my dead body" A long contract just pretty much ensures we'll get a fee if they leave - and why shouldn't they move to a big club? Most people are ambitious in their chosen careers and I'll be delighted for them if they end up playing for Arsenal or Man U. Also if we don't sell them on we'll have no room for the next generation. (George Hayward, currently U14. You read it here first.)

Oh, and although this is a repeat thread this is SO much better than yesterday's effort which was just basically a load of people going "Woo!", "Yeah!", "Great!", "My man!" etc etc like a load of dumb-assed trailer park trash Americans at a Jerry Springer show.

Really?

How would the club have stayed afloat without cash from player sales, then?

As it happens, Zamora and Virgo would have seen some money come the club's way because they were under 23 [as was the case with Harding] so they are not really the best examples.

This is a nonsense argument, as I actually agree with your sentiment, which is "I wish the news that so and so has signed a four year deal actually meant they would stay here that long".

Its just that post-Bosman a player 'seeing out his contract' rather than signing a new one with a year left, has come to mean exactly the opposite of loyalty. Ask a Spurs fan how loyal they think Sol Campbell was.

The truth of it is that the longer deals are a great thing for the club whichever way you look at it, as it means the player is content and that SHOULD they leave the club is in a stronger negotiating position.

Or Winston Bogarde at Chelsea who 'loyally' saw out his contract on the grounds it was about 20 times more than he could get anywhere else.

That is the other side of the coin. If Cox, Lynch, etc, suddenly go the way of Kevin McGarrigle (sorry, can't even spell his name now), i.e. become shit; or if they get long-term injuries you can bet your life this board will be full of posts saying "why oh why did we give those losers such long deals?"

Worthing
If another club wants them they will need to pay a proper fee though. I give you Adam Virgo by way of an example.
