Sussex skipper Chris Adams and Murray Goodwin both smashed unbeaten centuries to severely damage Middlesex's promotion challenge at Hove.

The pair set a new competition record third-wicket stand of 228 as the Sharks - chasing a testing target of 249 - got home by eight wickets with 10 balls to spare.

Sussex's fourth win of the season lifts them off the bottom of National League Division Two, while the Crusaders must now win both their remaining two games, and hope rivals Hampshire and Northamptonshire slip up to stand any chance of promotion.

The Sharks' run chase began in shaky fashion with Chad Keegan quickly removing Tony Cottey (five) and Tim Ambrose (one) cheaply.

But former Zimbabwe star Goodwin then compiled 14 fours and two sixes in his fourth league century of the season, and his 118 came off 117 balls.

Adams - who should have been run out on 52 and then caught behind off Simon Cook on 97 - tormented Middlesex in a 124-ball vigil during which he struck 11 boundaries.

Opener Paul Weekes had earlier cracked a season's best 91 as the Crusaders posted 248 for six from their 45 overs after choosing to bat.

The left-handed batsman stroked 10 fours and two sixes, both off spinner Mark Davis, in his 108-ball knock.

Weekes had added 85 in 12 overs for the fourth wicket with Ed Joyce (40) when he was yorked by left-arm pace man Jason Lewry.

Joyce - who struck three fours and a six from 42 balls - fell next ball to Robin Martin-Jenkins, who also quickly had Jamie Dalrymple caught at cover for a duck on the way to taking a competition best four for 46.

Martin-Jenkins began by taking a wicket with his first ball by having skipper Andrew Strauss (18) caught at backward square-leg.

He then had pinch-hitter Keegan taken at cover before Weekes and Owais Shah (33) shared a fourth-wicket stand of 61 in 13 overs.
