SUSSEX RE-SIGN GOODWIN
Former Zimbabwe batsman Murray Goodwin
will return to Sussex in 2004 after
agreeing a new one-year contract.

Goodwin was looking for a longer deal,
which the club were unwilling to offer
with a second overseas player, Mushtaq
Ahmed, also under contract.

South African Gary Kirsten was a
possible replacement but the batsman
pulled out for business reasons.

"It was a long, drawn-out affair but we
wanted to make sure we got the right
person," said coach Peter Moores.

Great news. It's better to have a settled squad - that looks a pretty useful side.

Sussex re-sign Goodwin

Goodwin had been holding out for a longer contract
Former Zimbabwe batsman Murray Goodwin will return to Sussex in 2004 after agreeing a new one-year contract.
Goodwin was looking for a longer deal, which the club were unwilling to offer with a second overseas player, Mushtaq Ahmed, also under contract.

South African Gary Kirsten was a possible replacement but the batsman pulled out for business reasons.

"It was a long, drawn-out affair but we wanted to make sure we got the right person," said coach Peter Moores.

"Murray is the final piece in the jigsaw for 2004."

Goodwin is likely to be half of a formidable Sussex opening partnership alongside Ian Ward, who signed from Surrey in September.

Goodwin, 31, was key in Sussex's drive to their first ever County Championship title last term, scoring 1496 runs.

He celebrated with an unbeaten 335 - the highest score ever by a Sussex batsman - in the final match of the season.

He played the last of 19 Tests for Zimbabwe in 2000 and also plays first-class cricket for Western Australia.

Well, you missed a hell of a season.

:lolol:

Excellent news about Goodwin. Despite the fact that he made a major contribution to the championship win, we all had the distinct impression that the Club wanted him out. Kirsten's decision seems to have led to a rethink.

Let's hope he's not been discouraged.
