Munich

Me and a mate are off to Munich this weekend to spend a week at the octoberfest. Have any of you guys been before or have any ideas or advice for other things that we could do in that area as we can't drink day and night for 8 days. We looked into going to a bayern match but it's sold out. We have a car and will travel, we are both into horse racing are there any good tracks near by. Any advice much appreciated

There are lots of touts at the Bayern games and highly worth it. I got a ticket at face value for the second tier off one which I thought was weird, but it was genuine. Awesome place. Great beer and food! You will love it.

went with a mate last year (not to octoberfest),its a great city plenty to do ,alianze arena ground tour , BMW motors museum and factory tour,theres a nearby POW camp well worth a visit ,cant remember the name,just google things to do in munich ,and dont forget to see the the alianze at night,have a great time

Reckon you are over thinking things here... Aim to spend around 10 hours every day in the Hofbrauhaus and its surrounds & the associated willing attractions and the rest of the time preparing for the next night

Have you booked tables? If not you'll need to get in there and get a table at 10:30am and hold onto it all day. If you turn up much later you'll have trouble getting in. The queues are huge, especially on weekends.

Dachau Concentration camp. Its a place that if in Munich, everyone should go

I have been twice, 2008 and 2010. It is a fantastic experience but be prepared for it to packed to the rafters, especially this middle weekend. Agree with the 'get there early' advice above, we were queing outside the Lowenbrau tent at 8.30am on the Saturday morning and only just got a table inside. Would highly recommend the Paulaner and Hofbrau tents, and also the Weinzelt after 9pm where all the local FIT totty assembles in their Drindls... As well as the official website I found the one below a very useful source of info. Have fun!

Been 3 times back in the late 80s early 90s love it but agree on the problems getting in the tents it can be a real challenge, is this the last weekend if so it will be even worse. Plenty of other places to visit in and around Munich including the science museum down by the river and nuumerous other beer kellers around. Are Munich 1860 at home whilst your there. Agreed that you must visit Dachau a very thought provoking experience. How cold is it a beer in the Englisher Gardens is also recommended?

Tip for Oktoberfest - do NOT wear flip flops unless you want to lacerate your feet on broken glass.

Away from the boozing - as people above mention....get to see a Bayern game - or at the very least an 1860 game. If you see the later be sure to abuse Gabor Kirali or whatever his name is - the ex palace keeper that wears grey jogging bottoms (still).

Great thanks I never thought I'd need to book. I will make sure we are there early then to avoid disappointment and queuing. We are keen to see a football match or two so we are going to turn up at the Allianz and hope to get a ticket for the neutral area or away failing that as mentioned we will try 1860 Munich. I'm interested in military history so will take the recommendation and pay a visit to dachau

Try stealing one of the litre size beer glasses, otherwise you have to pay 8 euros at the airport.

We tried to drink for seven straight days and nights in Prague this time last year but my drinking buddies were slacking after five days, which is fair enough but it's also along way to drive without taking in a little of the local culture
