MS Word help anyone!

Microsoft Word help anyone? Am using MS Office 2002.

I have compiled an address list of about 600 potential clients as a MS Word document.

But I want to export it to address labels – currently using 3 x 7 A4 sheets.

Have tried through the Letters and Mailings options of MS Word Tools but it seems to only accept merges from databases. I don’t want to retype the fecking stuff into a database. There must be a blindingly obvious short-cut but I can’t see it.

Does anyone know a way round this?

Eternal thanks and a pint or two for any successful idea!

What format are the address in now, and how are they separated from each other ?

Yep they are separated from each other (each about 5 lines long) in a single left justified column

so it looks like this...

Name 1
Address 1 line 1
Address 1 line 2
Address 1 line 3

Name 2
Address 2 line 1
Address 2 line 2
Address 2 line 3
Address 2 line 4

Name 3
Address 3 line 1
Address 3 line 2
Address 3 line 3

etc....

How are the different parts of a single address separated from each other?

Each part of a single address is on a separate lines

each address is separated from the other by a double space

Personally, I'm not sure how you can do it, I'm no expert so someone else may have an idea.

I know it's no help now, but in future I'd type it straight into a database.

Sorry

Yep it looks like that ...

reason it was typed directly into MS Word was I was intially doing it remotely and cutting and pasting quite a few addresses

Was just about to say that. Save word doc as text only then open the txt file in excel.

There is a way of doing it using Word. It is a right pain to do and it requires buying the proper labels as well.

I can't remember the details, but I think you have to go to

Tool > Mailings > Mail Merge

Don't do it if you are tired. It is really fiddly and awkward, but not as bad as excessive typing or writing it out by hand. Not for long list either.

Do a test run on the first page as the labels cost dosh and often come out screwy.

I doesn't seem that the mail merging is a problem. It's getting the data in a format to carry out the merge.

That's what I thought which is why I suggested putting it into excel, and importing from there into mail merge.

If the addresses are in Word you'll need them in a table to perform a Mai Merge. But the format of your addresses suggests you won't be able to get them into a table using the usual easy method of

Table > Convert > Text to Table

If you just paste it as it is into excel, won't you still just have a long list that isn't much use?

Probably, yes - need some useful delimiting character between each address....
