Shearer's comments on Newcastle show exactly why sports washing happens. The famous man with absolutely no knowledge of geopolitics is willing to say on television, with a straight face that them owning a Premier League club is likely to be good for human rights in Saudi Arabia. He does not even need to be paid. The fact that they bring Newcastle fans 'hope* for the first time in 14 years' is enough for him to claim that white is black and black is white. I felt a bit sick in my mouth.

*- I presume that 'hope' is Geordie slang for 'billions'

Another reason why I don't really watch mainstream TV anymore.

Mark Chapman was awful too. Fully onboard with the Mags fans, not a single tricky question or concern. MOTD may be the happy clappy not the place, but the BBC 5live staff have been exactly the same on Monday and Friday evenings.

I read an ex-player’s autobio where it was made clear to succeed in EPL era broadcasting, to be employed, cynicism or mentioning anything negative is completely frowned upon. If you want to stay in the role, simply promote the ‘wonderful product’.

TS have been the same all week….everyday this week on White and Gob…but hardly any discussion outside of….ooooo all that money yum yum

I hope for Steve Bruce's sake that the Saiudi PR advisors have convinced them that sacking him can be explained away but strangling and dismembering him is very much beyond the pale.

Not sure I agree with that entirely. Mark Chapman is excellent generally, but is limited by being on the beeb and having to be impartial and politically correct. Let's not forget that Jamie Carragher managed to keep his job for gobbing a throat full of phlegm at a young girl.

He's a journalist. I'd love him and other BBC Sports people to persistently ask the difficult questions about the Saudi's or Mansour.

Never going to happen. They have to promote the EPL as wonderful.

The Telegraph today highlights how the football world struggles with perspective ....

"The Saudi's plan to spend just £50m in transfer fees this coming January".

Not said with irony.

Staggering. Not only no mention of the penalty but they declined to show Maupay missing a sitter in their wrap-up n favour of showing every Norwich chance and half-chance.

Exactly. And of course for the games on first, they dissect every bloody possible chance/half chance ad bloody infinitum.

They introduced MOTD 2 and the NUFC game tonight with a short piece highlighting that for some the takeover references “Sport washing” and there is a need to reference human rights issues with clips from various news and sports bulletins over the last week

PS: only last week the BBC produced a Panorama investigating how PL agents exploit young players https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000zqs8

This doc last week explored how Saudi Arabia is not only investing in sport but other forms of public life and why https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000zqs8
