Feeling bored and looking forward to next season so, how about a MM close season? Mine is the long hot summer of 1976.

The 75/76 season had seen us go close to promotion but blow it, as we so often did, with bad away form and a poor Easter. Peter Taylor Mk1 was in charge and he was probably the best manager for spotting talent. He had built a good team which had been enhanced by the introduction of the young Peter Ward but even his 6 goals in the last eight games of the season were not enough.

Taylor carried on his team building with the close season signings of experinced defenders Graham Cross & Chris Cattlin. Despite dissapointment, we looked strong enough to get it right next time out....

As for me, after a couple of years commuting to the Dark Place (East Croydon), I followed the lead of a couple of mates who, after moaning about the job everyday, actually decided to leave.

being on the railways, i took advantage of my last 2 free tickets. I went as far north as i could, and played football on the beach at Thurso in Sctotland. Also in that trip, i discovered that the pubs in Edinburgh closed as soon as my train pulled in, spent a night sightseeing in Inverness before the 1st train out and couldn't find a breakfast in Aberdeen that didn't have haggis on the menu! My last night in Edinburgh was quite good though.

The following week I headed for Ostend. Sleeping on the beach or in bars until thrown out for being asleep. One evening some brit girls let me stay at there's and we watched as the ferry came in bringing the boyfriend oh one home, taht would be my cue to go. going Continental was also my 1st experince of seeing some old dear shaking her pot at me in a public toilet and, indeed, mixed toilets in the bars, quite off-putting.

back in good old Blighty and the sun shone everyday, not much incentive to find a job. It was the hottest, driest, summer. A summer of Kikki Dee, Elton john, droughts & ladybirds.. My daily timetable was getting up late, lunchtime at The vanguard (now Pasha) with a qtr bottle or 2 of Blackthorn (60p per bottle) then an afternoon on the beach by the pier.

The evening would be the Bo'sun, Vanguard then my summer home of Sherry's where i had many a happy night. Often that would lead to another trip to the beach before heading home, sometimes even the West Street Wimpy Run! My 21st was on a Saturday and a fellow bo'sum boy also had his 21st and finished up getting arrested on the beach.

......Back to the Albion and a shock when peter taylor decided to leave and team up again with Clough at Forest Albion moved quickly to appoint the young, untried, Alan Mullery as manager i was never a mullery fan before by his motivation, along with taylor's players, well, the rest is history.

The close season finished with the Bo'sun bus trip to Southend (but that's another story). Albion fought out a tough draw and the season was up & running.

1976 - we played Ipswich midweek away in the league cup right at the start of that season - drew, then won replay at home. Went on the Seagulls Special train.

I can sort of remember little bits

Being hot was the main memory, Sitting under the tree in the paddling pool in our back garden.

Remember being taken to the football in my dads old Austin Maxi

You went to the football when you were three?! Wow! Not bad. I was doing pretty much the same, funnily enough, paddling pool underneath a huge willow tree in our garden, being taxied (sp?) about in my uncle's Maxi. Marvellous :)

Yeah they could have at least woken me up

To be fair i dont think i missed a home league game for 16 years until i got M.E. just as i was doing my G.C.S.E's

Loved seeing all those games over the years, Joined the Army at 17 and left when i was 24! Medically discharged after my bike accident and got back into my football then

Always used to follow the club when i was away(world service reception permitting)

Freddie your stories are always a fantastic social document...................................................... more I say... I would just love to see Brighton and Hove again in that long hot summer. I was 7 and remember burning my feet on the pavements in Hangleton and space rocket ice creams and the red arrows screaming through toads hole valley at about 150 feet and me and my mum and dad diving for cover!!!

Thank you Freddie, the 75/76 season was the one that got me interested in the Albion, the one that I count my support as starting from...was gutted that we missed out on promotion, at least we made up for it the following season.

That was the saeason before I started going.....we were still living in the Dark Place then and mates pushing me to be a Palace fan.... but it was written in the stars and the following year we'd moved to Brighton. I was 9 during this summer when my shoes got stuck to the tarred roof because of the heat.

Ah, the summer of '76, what memories. Had just done my 'A' levels and was off to university. I went on holiday (well, actually, I began three years holiday as I became a student, lol) on the day that Peter Taylor (Mk 1) resigned to rejoin Cloughie and didn't find out who our new manager was until three weeks later (the days before the internet, of course). I think there was a sense of quiet expectation that we would get promoted at the start of the 76-77 season (a bit like the 2000-1 season) and this was reinforced by the league form (7-2 thrashing of York City and on MoTD as well), but more the League Cup run, beating Ipswich and West Brom before the end of September.

I should have really got a job before I went to Uni but....well, the weather was just too nice, wasn't it!

Good reminisce Freddie as ever. I was 9 (and a half I'll have you know) and I all remember about the summer of 76 was the weather and getting "Blackwashed" by the WIndies after Greig's famous "We'll make em grovel" comment. Er, wrong Tony.
I remember the 45 year old Brian Close upsetting Mikey Holding and getting pulverised at the Oval and muttering "tek it on t'chest son" to himself. About 10 years ago I played cricket with Tiger Surridge (Stuart's son) and he told me that Close stayed with the Surridges in Earlsfield (about half a mile from where I'm typing this now) that night. Tiger saw Close coming out of the bathroom and his arms and chest were absolutely covered in welts and bruises. A brave but perhaps foolhardy man.
Don't make them like that anymore...

I have a copy of Brian Close's autobiography unsurprisingly called "I Don't Bruise Easily!"

I remember the summer of 76 very well, the water ban was on and local cricket tracks were lethal. I played for Keymer & Hassocks that year and opening the batting wasn't a fun pastime I can assure you!

I was working on the new grammar school science room on Old Shoreham rd and someone there told me who our new manager was a few days before it was common knowledge and in a summer like that just about anything was possible, they were great days.
