Mobile Phones -Pay as you Go

Wife and I recently purchased new Mobile phones and changed network, both surprised on how quickly our first £10 Top Up lasted as we are only casual users.
When we Topped Up again decided to keep a daily check on the Top Up total and found that even when no messages or texts sent or received the total reduced, e/mail sent requesting details of messages/texts sent/received and was amazed that details could only be provided at a cost of £10,which i was not prepared to do.
I was then advised by someone in the trade that firms are trying to persuade Pay & Go customers to take out a monthly £10 arrangement which could well be reasonable for regular users but costly for a casual user.
I would be interested to learn whether others have had a similar experience.

Is the phone's internet connection on? That could cause some charges if it is

I did take out a contract over a year ago but had such poor service I cancelled it and went back to PAYG. As it is I can now chose use any provider and given that I move around a lot this benefits me getting the best signal. I even have two 3G dongles which are PAYG plus a MiFi dongle that's a combination of WifI and 3G.

Thats my whole point, with my previous phone this was a fact but since changing networks it is how i stated.
Can the introduction of a Monthly charge option be the reason or is it just coincidence?
