Didn't see the prog but saw the trailer a week or so ago. Looked very much like something he wouldn't have done when the tories were in power. As well as being a pathetic attempt to make him look human, wasn't it also a thinly veiled poke at "Blair's Britain"?
It does seem to be Scouse night on BBC. Firstly, Portillo in a working calss area. Then much of the same with rat cathing on One Life. Yes I fully agree with your comments Dropkick Turnip, and with these two programmes on that close together is the scheduler trying to say something. Or simply just a coincidence.
I think it's both as well. There have been a few of these programmes where Tory gobshites try to live on a tight budget, so I wasn't expecting anything outstanding but what made it for me was the way he interacted (or didn't) with the kids.
He found the whole week to be very demanding - although that didn't stop him being patronising at the end. He was all amazingly camp...and didn't he look a picture in the baseball cap?
The best bit was when he was criticised by the mum when they finally met. He clearly was expecting to be told he'd done a good a job and was gobsmacked to be torn apart. He then got as sulky as a kid himself. Smug git.
I actually met Portillo, through work, when he was just starting out as an MP. He was a smug git then too.
I think Michael Portillo is a good bloke. He actually taks a lot of sence and is a very good politician. How he is not leader of the Tories is unbelivable. He is there best chance of success.
My opinion of him changed by the gracious and sporting way he accepted defeat by the Labour candidate in 1997.
