Mexico 86 - Official Film

Mexico 86 was my first World Cup and in my mind still the best I've seen.

Does anybody remember the official film that was made of this tournament because I'd love to track it down and get a copy, even if it's VHS to copy onto DVD. Rather than a uninspired all-goals round up I remember it being a nicely packaged film that started with reflection of pre-World Cup earthquake before focusing on some of the great memories of the tournament, the Mexican Wave, temporarily awesome Danish, Brazil-France match (wow), Maradona (wanka) etc...

Also, does anybody else feel there is a MASSIVE hole in the DVD market for good coverage of football played in decades gone by. Just bought the Match of the Day comp of 60s/70s/80s. Good 4 hours of coverage but surely each decade deserved at least a 3 disc set in themselves.

I have it - yes it's called Hero. If I can find it you can borrow it to copy...

May favourite was Spain '82.

Paulo Rossi was the best out and out forward I have ever seen to date for that World Cup.

I think FIFA commission a film every year, or at least used to.

I stumbled across an actual 35mm copy of one of the world cups in a film library a few years ago.

Was he the one who had that really famous celebration when he ran towards the camera having completely lost it? It was one of my most favourite celebrations ever - used to be on the opening credits of Sportsnight

paulo Maldini

I think that may have been paulo maldini who scored that goal and went towards the camera.

I remember the WC where Socrates scored that goal against the USSR after mullering Scotland.

Falcao's goals against Italy ( I seem to recall it was a Brazil Italy Semi Finanl which Italy won 3-2)

The Brazil side included Zico, Revelino, falcao, Junior, Socrates....absolutely fabulous side.

Not as good as the 1970 Brasil side, who I still think is the best side I have ever had the priviledge(sp) to see. Pure football played by people who didn't argue with the ref, fall on the ground as if they had been shot and played the game how it should be played.

It was Marco Tardelli, the goal that put Italy 2-0 up in the final

Spain '82 had a 2nd group stage where the winners and runners-up in the first round formed four pools of three. The winners of the 2nd round groups then went through to the semis.

Brazil v Italy was the last match of their 2nd round group (which also included Argentina). Brazil only needed a draw, but Rossi got a hat-trick. They went on to comfotably beat a Boniek-less Poland in the semi final..

"Hero" is a strange film based as it is on following the antics of a small boy sneaking into the games without paying....................

can't imagine the likes of Blatter being too happy with the image that provides.

anjd the commentary is by Brian "Gloomy, its all crap now" Glanville

The commentary on my version of Hero is by Michael Caine!

I somehow think the above and the previous thread are massively 2 different films!
