McClaren speaks... (and praises FDM)

Steve McClaren chose to reflect on the result rather than the performance after Middlesbrough needed extra-time to see off Brighton in the Carling Cup.

Only 10,435 fans were at the Riverside Stadium to watch Boro make hard work of creating clear-cut chances against a well-organised, but technically outclassed, Brighton outfit.

McClaren was without injured midfielder Gaizka Mendieta, but chose to rest Joseph Desire-Job and Bolo Zenden, as a tricky trip to Southampton follows in the Premiership on Saturday.

Recalled striker Michael Ricketts missed the best of the early chances, and although Michel Kuipers was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers, Boro could not find a way past him in normal time.

It took an instinctive finish from substitute Malcolm Christie on 93 minutes to finally beat the inspired Dutchman.

McClaren, however, was just pleased to have got past the "potential banana skin", although skipper Gareth Southgate hobbled off in the first half with what could be a serious groin problem.

"We got there in the end." said McClaren. "Everybody knows these games are difficult and potential banana skins.

"Teams last night have fallen by the wayside, teams this evening very nearly did. It is one of those rounds in which you have to get through it.

"We knew Brighton were not going to be easy. Steve Coppell has got them well organised, working hard and that's why they are doing well in their division.

"The goalkeeper, I thought, made some terrific saves and that's what you get in these games - an inspired performance by the opposition."

McClaren added: "I am delighted we got the vital goal, I would have liked it in normal time, but the most important thing was that we won the game and we can now forget about it and look forward to the draw."

I read that too. The interesting thing about our Division 3 and 2 championship seasons is that week in, week out opposing fans, players and managers would talk about Kuipers being inspired or making the save of his career against them.

As we all know - that is just not true. He pulls out top class saves in nearly every game he plays.

Welcome back FDM.

Totally agree Bozza. FDM was on form last night and we know he can produce this week in and week out.

You can forgive people for saying what they do though - they don't get to see him every week, as we had (and hopefully, have) the pleasure of doing so.

Sorry to say it but from Kuipers' point of view it was a crap performance last night.

We know that Coppell thinks he's a great shot stopper but his kicking is crap. And last night he made some great saves but his kicking was crap.

So he hasn't done anything to improve his chances of keeping Roberts out.

xx

Chemical Brother is right as every kick FDM made last nite fell to one of there players,
Now if he could improve on that, what a keeper we would have!!
A heavy percentage of the blame must also lay with the midfield there aswell coz they are not capable of winning anything in the air.

I don't think so.

You definitely wouldn't be saying that if Kuipers' shite attempt at a kick from a back pass which might as well have been a pass to Ricketts on the edge of the box had resulted in him scoring from the resultant one-on-one and us losing 1-0. Fortunately Lenny Kravitz made a great save but that's not really the point...

I don't think his performance was crap as he made some excellent saves, but I agree about the kicking!

even though Kuipers kicking isnt excellent, i still rate him as our best keeper at the moment - Roberts just doesnt have his presence and his shot stopping ability.

You're wrong.

I would rather have someone who makes match-winning saves but can't kick than someone who can kick but won't make unbelievable saves.

However I accept that the two keepers are pretty even so let's compare:

KUIPERS: Looks like Lenny Kravitz
Is Dutch
Eats space cake
Has a kid called Duke
Has only ever played for the Albion

ROBERTS: Looks like a character out of a Japanese arcade game
Is English
Had a dubious relationship with the owner of a Middlesbrough bedshop.
Has played for some northern monkey clubs, has shit hair and has a beetroot face sometimes

Shit hair?

Kuipers had no hair yesterday, he'd shaved it off and looked absolutely shit. His hair was best when he grew it and had it plaited. I like dreadlocks myself. Cool on black men! Remember Blinke (sp) ? Also Dutch I believe.
