Mayo Admits Cheating To Get Forbes Sent Off

Brighton's Kerry Mayo has admitted that he tried to get Terrell Forbes sent off during Monday nights game at the Withdean Stadium. After the clash Mayo was, apparently, left needing two stitches in his eye whilst Forbes had a gash to the bone on his leg.

Mayo, in an interview from www.thisisbrighton.co.uk admitted he thought about how to react to the incident at the time, ""I wasn't going to go down, hence the delay, but you can't head-butt people and get away with it. That is the reason why I went down".

"You can say I over-reacted or what you like, but if he had head-butted me and I had stood up the ball was five yards away, the ref could have had his eyes on the ball and it might not have been seen".

"If you are going to get head-butted you have got to go down, it's as simple as that. None of our players here would lash out like that, it's just unprofessional."

And of course helping another player get sent off isn't.

There is no doubt that Forbes acted foolishly, you don't stick your head in someone's face and expect to get away with it. However Forbes acted in the heat of the moment, his mistake was irrational and stupid. Mayo cheated.

I know which type of player I'd rather have.

Mayo wasn't pretending that Forbes did something he didn't actually do, he was making sure that the ref took action.

I don't condone what Mayo did, but it's not really cheating in this instance.

he meant that despite the head butt he could have stayed on his feet and the rangers guy would have got away with it...

slightly different to cheating...

and funy ow no-one's mentioned Sabin's cheating "dive" to try and win a penalty in the first half when he tried to flick the ball past Roberts and then catch his own foot as he went past BR making it look like there was contact.

Only prob was that Br had the ball safely and was five yards away when he went down

If the guy made contact and drew blood then he had to go, and I don't really blame Mayo for going down. If he'd stayed on his feet the whole thing could have escalated and he could have got sent off as well.

Agree that maybe it wasn't a good idea for him to go public though.

Yep - not sure that it is totally wise to admit you've hit the desk purposely - these things start to huant you in future - he's bound to attract attention next time he goes down wether its justified or not....

f*** it, he got butted and went down, players do it all the time, its not like he was feigning injury.

It is pretty obvious on the replay that there was a delay between the butt and the fall and i am quite pleased he came out and admitted that it was a little over done.

To a certain extent its rather honest to admit you took a dive when you didn't really need to - yes indeed the clash was a red card - but can't this also go against him in future?? To be unwittingly classed as someone who would take a dive to make a point??

Yeah, me too. I'd rather have Mayo, because he's not stupid enough to go and head-butt another player in the first place and because he's our player.

The whole argument should be academic anyway. If the ref (or linesman) saw Forbes make contact, that was enough for the sending off. If neither official saw it and only saw Mayo fall, then Forbes shouldn't have been sent off and that cannot be Mayo's fault.

I don't think its any different to players going down when they've been fouled when they could quite easily have stayed on thier feet. Its just that it was in an incident involving a sending off.

He'd have been better saying nothing. Whatever the rights and wrongs and, to be fair, he was certainly wronged by Forbes. But absolute honesty isn't always the best policy when you're being interviewed by The Argus.

If the guy was hurt enough to need stitches then I feel he is more than entitled to go down. The way he went down was no different to anyone else I have seen recently who has had it done to them.
