Does anyone know Mark Raven as he is the source of much debate in our office at the moment.

Is it true he was blinded or partially blinded following England away in Turkey in 1993?

Apparantly he is a big Albion fan, wanted to see if the story I heard was true.

Don't know him to speak to, but know him by sight and remember the incident. He lost one eye when someone threw a coin (or stone?) and it hit him. I'm pretty sure it was at an away game in Turkey. Hasn't put him off travelling though as I've seen him at several England away games and know he's a die-hard fan.

I know Mark via the Seagulls mailing list - top bloke. Goes to all of Brighton and England games. First met him in 1999 at Darlington away, although knew him from the Seagulls list before that.

I'll post this link to the list so he can come and answer for himself.

Yes know him fairly well, sit 2 seats away from him at Withdean, drink in the same pub prior to matches etc...

He was involed in an incident yes but i'm not sure he'd want people talking openly about it on here, i may be wrong though.

P.S. If you do read this Mark stop feckin farting during matches! You stink!

PS Mark was recently "shot to fame" by an appearance on Football Focus - although my ex-pat status means I haven't seen it. And if you watch the 2001 season video, he is one of the fans interviewed about the championship.

Tis me you are talking about!

I did indeed get my right eye taken out (well cut in half!)by a coin in the Turkey v England match in Izmir 31.3.1993. Was taken to a lovely training hospital were i underwent surgery but they couldnt save the sight in my eye! Was in hospital for a week, before being flown back to Moorefields eye hospital in London. They had trained the Surgeons who operated on my and confirmed that i had been blinded on impact! It also meant 5 boring months off work (couldnt drink either due to the number of drugs i was on!)

The punishment to Turkey - a six month ban on home matches, they didnt have a match for 7 months and a pathetic fine!

Apart from Holland away the same year, i have not missed an away qualifier , I was in Macedonia, but have decided to give the game on Saturday a miss!
