I am looking to NSC - and presumably our numerous Manhattan contingent - for a bit of advice and possibly some recommendations to help me rent a New York apartment for a week in August (the week the Cardinals are in town naturally)

I can do a google search and find any number of sites offering various, but has anyone got some quality local knowledge of Manhattan? any personal recommendations? or particular ones to avoid?

The diversity of this board never ceases to amaze me and I look forward to seeing what you can come up with for me.

Depends what you are looking for

Morning,

I moved from NYC in August last year, so I'm still pretty current.

What sort of thing are you looking for, in what sort of area?

I'm sure you know that the weak pound is going to make a lot of things really expensive, and accomodation is NOT cheap in NYC anyway.

The first place to look is http://newyork.craigslist.org/ there's always loads of accomodations on there. A lot of people go out to Long Island in August, so you may be able to pick up a sublet in the city.

But knowing what you want will make it easier to help,

atp

How you can even think of going there after the way the Wappinger tribes were cheated of their land is beyond me. You are just condoning the behaviour of Peter Minit and the other devils from the Nappeckamack theft.

I’d agree with acrossthepond in making Craig’s list your first port of call.

Most apartments with short leases tend to be geared up for visiting business people rather than tourists - ie fully serviced apartment with doorman etc but very pricey. When I first moved to NYC I tried to find short term accommodation, other than a hotel, for a few weeks whilst sorting out an apartment and had to give up and settle for a hotel.

One word of warning, there was an article in the paper not long ago about tenants sub-letting their apartments, illegally, to tourists for short periods. Said tourists then moved in only to be forcibly evicted by the proper landlord. Although these were in Brooklyn and Queens they were still advertised on Craig’s list - in fact CL has come in for a bit of flack recently as it is now so big that a lot of its ads aren’t vetted and there have been complaints about commissions and deposits etc. not being returned.

Also, a lot of owners do not want to sub-let for only a week - it's more often one or two months.

If you do find something suitable you want to move quickly as it won’t hang around.

Unfortunately trying to find an apartment for holidays in NYC is just not that easy - had you thought about doing a swap with someone looking for accommodation in the UK ?

Why have you discarded the idea of hotels? Cost or principle? There is a fair few people on here who have holidayed in NYC who should be able to recommend a decent hotel in the area....

As a fellow New Yorker (relocated from Sussex last year) I would go for the hotel route as getting a place for a week will be tough and pretty pot luck with what you end up with rather than a hotel which you can scope out online (trip advisor etc).

As your coming in August, you might find some fairly good deals at hotels in the financial district as they mostly cater to business people and with the current job cuts and it being the summer holiday period, i think you should be able to get some good deals (even with the pound dropping)

If your after an "Apartment" type feel then you should try the embassy suites on Vesey St. They are essentially mini apartments with bedroom, kitchen / living room and separate bathroom with all mod cons (cable TV etc) The kitchens even include a fridge and stove (in most cases).

Its never been that cheap there but its worth checking it out. I woundnt recommend staying at any of the airport locations though - pretty grim and too far away...

Hoboken (in New Jersey) is pretty good - not sure about Jersey city though....

If you want any more advice then let me know

And if you stump for the ES in Vesey, ask them for the American Express company rate. Try hotels.com as well.

Top work guys. I've had a look at those sites and bookmarked em.
I hadn't considered Queens, but if its that easy to get to Times Square, its back on the list.

The reason for an apartment is that I am taking my three "kids" (15,18,21) so really need to arrange separate beds. Two adjoining hotel rooms is one option, but the idea of a one week apartment was suggested and it seems to tick several boxes, including being able to sometimes self-cater (having pizza delivered like on Friends - I kid you not)

I've had a look at this site and there seem to be several options but I would prefer to go with a personal recommendation if I can find one
Holiday apartments in New York City, USA

I've got the flights booked and the baseball tickets organised, so my main priorities are sorted. So I've just got six months to find somewhere brilliant to stay - and then hope that Sterling recovers... which is a bit like backing Brown's popularity rating over Obama in a win double with the Albion to make the play-offs!

Thanks for your help. Any further inspirations gratefully received.

I am off to New York in November, and have been looking at accommodation, the hotels are indeed pricey, but have found there are afew decent b&b's in the south harlem district (which is very safe nowadays) they are all pretty nice, and are around $80-$120 a night price range most include private bathrooms, which most of the cheaper hotels do not.
