Did they seem "set for greatness" at any stage? I'm not sure anyone truly believed they'd be able to compete with Real Madrid or Barcelona and that they would be a flash in the pan. It is impossible in Spanish football to buy a club and transform it at the rapid rate their Qatari thought he could. It isn't possible because of the disparity in the size of the clubs.

I would argue it's easier in England, with the right club. Newcastle were perfect for Saudi investment because the club could actually sustain European football and have an infrastructure which could lead to it genuinely rivalling the top clubs. Malaga were never in a position to do something remotely similar.
