Just heard on Talksport that a child who won last year's sports day race was prevented from taking part this year, "to give someone else a chance", leaving said child in tears at being denied the chance to compete.

Is it any wonder our sportsmen tend to suck so much? What chance do we have in the future if we discourage and punish being a winner in this country?

More relevantly to the child, he may be rubbish at maths and science and english, yet be good at sports, yet he is being denied his chance to so well at school?

This whole non-competitive thing really grates on my nerves. It's getting worse now it's not just sport. Mrs Pasty's 12 year old had a spelling test at school last week. I told her if she got more than 90% I would buy her a nice present. She said she'll never know her actual score as they don't do that anymore, they just give a colour coded result. ie Red=not very good, Amber=OK, Green=Good. That's about all they do as they don't want to over-encourage or discourage good or bad students.
WHAT UTTER TOSH !

Nah, I reckon he left school a few years ago

We had this discussion very recently when I said that school sports days were being done away with because the little ones were being harmed by competition. Kids cannot bear to lose apparently.

A friend went to his child's sports day and they had to compete for everything in a team of 3. It was a girl and two boys.
How can they put girls against boys at that age?

What is wrong with a good old fashioned egg and spoon race, sack race and skipping.
You got points for your house no matter where you came and rosettes for the first three.

Life is made up of competition for jobs etc so children have to learn to lose at some stage,

Hit the nail on the head there Yorkie. Competition prepares you for life, for job interviews, for promotions, for everything !!!

It is a crazy world we live in at the moment, perhaps Arsenal could not play in the premiership this season to let someone else have a chance to win :dunce:

I agree with all of that except that girls should compete against boys. You should watch the mixed Gaelic football and hurling over here as the girls are physically equal and almost more competitive than the boys of the same age ( my boy is 8). If you seperate them surely the girls start to believe they are inferior.

And the Albion would hardly ever play because we win LOADS of championships and play offs and stuff...

There is a school of thought that the lack of competition in the classroom has directly led to the drop in grades for boys. Converesly, these teaching methods are ideal for girls and have seen their grades improve.

It would be interesting to actually receive the basic facts about why he wasn't allowed to race. The problem in primary school children is physical attributes, some grow up quicker than others and if a youngster has agrowth spurt quicker than the others this may be perceived as a disadvantage to all others and perhaps to give others a chance of competing on even terms was asked to withdraw. This is one reason why youth footballers tend to be kept in age groups. Even in secondary schools the change in physical appearance is very noticeable between 12 and 14 year olds, though there are 12 year olds built like 16 year olds and 14 year olds who look about 11. It is noticeable that in a school football competition I ran a few years ago the mini league of 8 teams followed the order of age by its completion.

I'm all for competition and I know that the school I teach in encourages it though our sports day tomorrow appears to have been a victim of todays weather! Teams and individuals compete in area competitions and are placed according to their performance.
