Madejski makes manager vow

Exclusive by Stuart Roach

John Madejski welcomed the support of Reading's fans
Reading chairman John Madejski insists he will never be tempted to "poach" a new manager as he searches for Alan Pardew's replacement.

Madejski is still fuming over Pardew's decision to walk out on his Reading contract and join First Division promotion rivals West Ham.

But Madejski told the BBC Sport website he is not tempted to adopt a dog eat dog approach to filling Pardew's shoes.

"I do not believe in poaching people from their contract," Madejski said.

He added: "If we decide we want a manager who was employed elsewhere then I would contact their chairman and ask to speak to their manager.

The next step we take will be crucial and we need to tread very carefully

"If he said no, then that would be the end of it."

Madejski is angry over West Ham's persistence in chasing Pardew - and baffled by the manager's desire to leave for another First Division side.

"I don't have good feelings about West Ham but how they run their business is up to them and for them to think about.

"I would only ever follow the regulations of how it is laid down," Madejski said.

He continued: "I don't believe Alan should be there.

"I believe in loyalty and sticking by the rules. If someone breaks the rules and breaks their contract, how can I wish them well? It's just not on."

Madejski was determined to take a stand against Pardew's attempts to sever his contract after coming under criticism for allowing former manager Mark McGhee to talk to Leicester nine years ago.

Pardew free to join West Ham
And the millionaire businessman added he may have walked away from football for good, but for the support of Reading's staff and supporters.

"I have got a job to do here and I would like to see it through," Madejski said.

He added: "I had so much support from the fans and I feel galvanised by that. We are doing so well and have produced such a good team on and off the pitch."

Reading have now begun their search for a new manager - and Madejski claims he is tempted to employ Pardew's replacement without tying him down to a contract.

"I'm wondering whether we bother having a contract because, quite frankly, they don't appear to be worth the paper they are written on.

"Why spend a lot of time negotiating a new contract when they don't stack up anyway?

"I feel very indignant about that and I don't know whether I will bother to have a contract next time."

Pardew will take over at West Ham on 18 October
Caretaker manager Kevin Dillon, Pardew's number two for the past two seasons, hopes to be promoted to the manager's job on a full-time basis.

But Madejski revealed that the club has been overwhelmed with approaches for the job.

"We have to be very careful about how we take things forward from here because we don't want to upset the apple cart.

"At the moment, Kevin Dillon is doing an excellent job as caretaker manager. But we have got to review this very carefully.

"We have been inundated with approaches from people who would like to be here at Reading but the next step we take will be crucial and we need to tread very carefully."

Whatever the identity of the Royal appointment, Madejski is determined to draw a line under a fortnight which has rocked his club.

"My behaviour in this affair has been well documented and I think the whole thing is an outrage," he said.

"But I'm glad we have finished with it now because we have certainly got plenty to do. We have put this revolting situation behind us and can now move on."
