A couple of months ago , I sold my house & moved into a flat in Hove . I moved because I got offered a good price & I felt it was sensible to bank a decent amount of money & move into a less expensive flat .

The flat is in a great central location & is quite spacious with 3 beds & 2 baths but I am already regretting my move .

Why ? Because of the noise from neighbours .

I can hear the muffled sound of TV in the early hours of the morning & doors shutting & people talking . I’m can’t make out what they are saying but I can hear the noise .

All very annoying as it is effecting my sleep .

Sone of my friends live in flats either owned or rented & I’ve been speaking to them about these issues .

Three of my friends have never had any noise issues and I’ve been trying to work out if there is any practical reason for this .

These friends all live in older blocks of flats , namely Courtney gate , 4 grand Ave and Wilbury grange . After doing some research it appears these blocks were all built around 1930 give or take and as a result they were all built with thick concrete walls & floors . This seems to have the effect of shutting out noise travelling from flat to flat .

The building I live in was built in the 1980’s had the sound insulation seems almost non existent.

I wish I had thought about this before deciding on what flat to buy !

Anyone else had similar issues .

It’s difficult to complain because no one is shouting or anything it’s just the walls must be very thin hence all the sound travelling .

I’m considering selling next year and buying a flat in a pre war block at least I’ll get better sleep .,
As @timbha has already mentioned, try some sound proofing.
Acoustic underlay (thick variety) for flooring or carpet and wall sound proofing.
I do feel for you, as when we moved from Sussex up here, we rented a 1 bed flat, b4 buying a house.
The soundproofing was non existent.
When we sat in the lounge, you could here the chap next door sloshing around in the bath, and even more bizarre, hearing him flush the bog.

I’m sorry if I have come across as snooty that’s not my intention. I have had a fairly privileged upbringing so maybe that has come across in the wrong way . I have never posted in the Argus however . I have in the NY Times .

The Argus comments section online I mean, not the actual printed newspaper……think carefully about your answer here.

Someone gets it :)

Let's face it, it's not long ago that the OP was looking down his nose at people who are so poor they have to steal food and how it was ruining central Hove. Now we're supposed to feel sorry because he's bought an enormous flat for cash and can hear a muffled telly?
I wasn’t looking down my nose and it wasn’t food they were stealing it was cleaning stuff . Theft is still theft , I have no idea if he was poor or not . It’s not an enormous flat & I don’t consider myself wealthy at all .

So, the best flats are really old or very new?
I think the purpose built ones from 60's 70's are ok? As long as the reinforced concretes not crumbling? They generally hae good sized rooms and sensible separation.

I guess you need to do your homework carefully.

I'd never buy another Victorian chop shop from the 80's, or an 80's 90's new build. . . . Tbh new new builds look like crap to me, but I'm a dinosaur architecturally. I like rocks n stuff.

I have to admit I laughed at Guinness Boy’s post, you often post snooty comments on this forum especially having a dig at areas like Newhaven etc and banging on about how special Hove is.
You have also been spotted in The Argus comments…..I’ve seen them.

Obviously I don’t wish sleepless nights on anyone, and my best advice is to move……to Newhaven  you could live in a nice 5 bedroom detached house and still have money in the bank.
What's that got to do with the price of a Bentley?

…flat above….side?….one room I’d be looking to do something about is the bedroom so you get a decent nights sleep ..surely it’s worth investigating the possibility of some decent sound proofing paid for out of that “decent profit”…..also the cost I imagine will be outweighed against another move such as estate agents…solicitors ..moving fees etc…as regards to the other rooms…just put on your own background noise through the tv or a sound system?

I can't function with neighbour noise. It may be possible to get some sound proofing put in. I have partially sound proofed upstairs (I live in a Victorian end terrace) with soundproofing plaster board under the finished plastering. Seems to help. I'm never disturbed by street noise. Worth checking. Google brings up many options. I am so sensitive to noise that the dawn chorus will wake me if I leave a window open. :cautious:
The OP has been removed from your blocked list then H?

Are you saying because I have only been a signed up member since Oct, I can’t ask that we stick to the thread topic or that we respect the genuinely helpful efforts people are making to answer the current issue raised by the OP without you making digs at me now too?

First and foremost apologies if this upsets and offends anyone on here
Apparently you just being here does that for some people - I hope your situation resolves itself.

I’m outta here

Thanks to everyone that has responded in a helpful way - much appreciated. It’s the season of goodwill so peace to all & I’ll try to be more thoughtful about what I post in future as I don’t want to be viewed as the bad guy.

I'm saying NSC has a rich tradition of not sticking to the point and of low comedy being aimed in the direction of someone who may, just possibly, deserve it. It's kind of the culture. We've all been on the receiving end too, mods included.

Stick around and I'm sure you'll get it. Just don't go offering anyone an olive branch.
