I see that my second team Lewes got mullered on Saturday as well (4-0) and had a player sent off. Did anyone go? Didn't sound like it should have been such a big scoreline

It only went wrong in the second half. Having your goalkeeper sent off is never a great game plan.

Grays 4 Lewes 0

Leroy Griffiths scored four times in the second half as the Rooks slipped to their first defeat of the season at the hands of the full timers from just the other side of the Dartford tunnel. However the victory might well have not been as emphatic had it not been for a moment of madness by 'keeper Ade Bankole, whose retaliatory elbow on Griffiths earned him the first red card of his career. The Rooks also had two great chances to take the lead whilst the score was still 0-0.

Still no Barrington and with Jay Lovett joining him on the treatment table, Joe Vines made his first appearance of the season. The home side edged the first half hour in terms of possession, but neither side were able to create any clearcut chances. However as half time neared the Rooks began to take control, and the first of two great chances in the match was not converted. Luke Cornwall rose unchallenged at the far post to meet Junior Kadi's perfect left foot (yes really!) cross from the right flank, but could only direct his header wide. Cornwall and Lee Newman also had goalbound efforts blocked by a Grays defence which was being stretched to the limit by some fluent passing football.

After the break we had two moments when we might again have nosed in front had it been our day. First a Kirk Watts cross from the right clearly struck Youds's arm, but the linesman mysteriously failed to spot it despite being right in line. Then a lovely through ball by Watts sent Newman racing clear, but he checked onto his weaker left foot and then shot straight at Emberson.

Two minutes later the home side were in front. A lovely bit of skill by the impressive Dean Brennan got him to the byline, and when he pulled the ball back, former QPR striker Leroy Griffiths pounced from close range. Worse was to follow four minutes later, when a long ball sneaked over Max Hustwick's head, and Griffiths hit it first time past George from 25 yards. The big 'keeper could not be blamed for either of the goals, but a moment of madness from him on 67 minutes was certainly enough to put the result beyond doubt. A retaliatory elbow ended his participation in the afternoon as well as gifting Grays a penalty, and stand in 'keeper Vines had no chance with the spot kick with which griffiths completed his hat trick. He had even less hope of saving a thunderbolt from the same player with six minutes remaining, indeed I doubt whether many 'keepers in the land would have kept it out.

Despite the result there were plenty of positives to be derived from the afternoon. Grays are a full time outfit who did not lose at home all last season, and yet for nearly an hour we made them look very ordinary. Francis Duku was magnificent at the back, and indeed the workrate and commitment continued all over the park even when the cause was well and truly lost. George had been faultless until his aberration, and will no doubt have learned from the experience. Time now to bounce back with a win against Carshalton on Wednesday.

Comment from a Grays supporter on ConfSouth forum:-

"I thought in the first half Lewes were best side we've seen at the Rec since Aldershot beat us in the F A Cup last season. They bossed the midfield and could have taken the lead but for a poor header off target.

However, the second half saw us win much more in the midfield and once we scored we were well on top. ... I think we managed to catch you on a bad day when you couldn't turn your good approach work into shots on goal - two in the game if I remember correctly. Our Leroy (Griffiths ex-QPR) also had a bit to prove after being out suspended for the first two games. ... I still think you will be pushing for a play off place at the end of the season. "
