First of all: I think the ref was excellent tonight, best performer on the pitch. Should get mentioned.

That VAR call however... don't understand it. Clear penalty unless I'm missing something in the relation between playing the advantage and VAR calls.

Having seen it from several TV angles while watching the live stream there is a very good angle taken from the goal line touchline that shows the defender drag his boot across Welbecks toes. It was a penalty IMO> I was certain that VAR would give the spot kick.

Highlights now up on Sky. Welbeck clearly kicked. If Mason can't see that. he should be banned.

Difficult to tell from that. Yes, there is clear contact but that doesn’t automatically mean a penalty. Something about the way he went down gives me some doubt.

As Warren and Cantor said, how on earth wasn't the ref referred to the screen? That is the issue. Surely there is enough doubt?

Ex players should be trained and in the VAR room, Murray who wasn’t pro Brighton whatsoever during the game it was a pen.
No they shouldn't. Ex players in the media are repeatedly demonstrating their former club bias. If SSN is any guide, Arsenal would never get a decision. Sure as hell don't want them in the VAR box actually interfering in the outcome.

100 % this. Ex players (and current players) tend to be completely ignorant about the game. They add nothing to commentary.

Don’t refs do that now? Only team to lose after the final whistle to a Manc ref when playing manure.

As soon as I saw Lee Mason on VAR I was concerned. He was removed from his position as an on field referee because he is incompetent so why put him on VAR?
Exactly. If anything, refs have MORE influence when they are on VAR as they decide the crucial decisions.

No question about it - a nailed-on penalty, despite the advantage being played. A shocking decision made less shocking by the fact that the useless [redacted] Lee Mason had a hand in it.
The twat should be mothballed with immediate effect.
