Worthing
Has anyone fitted a new screen to a laptop or is it something that should only be done by a expert? They seem to think it is possible by looking on the net but I haven`t spoken with anyone who has actually done it.....

My clumsy git of a son`s btw.

ive only ever changed the screen on dell inspiron laptops before, and its not difficult at all, hardest thing to do is to unscrew the bolts that hold the screen in place (one always seems to be fixed in place with supersupersuper glue)
Obv could be different with your laptop, but all you have to do is unplug a wire that links in with the motherboard and its free to put in your other screen.

I replaced the hard drive in my laptop, and this tool is brilliant for the price, and has the heads for those star shaped screws - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000WTLIPA

theres usually an inverter pcb that sits at the bottom of the lcd. this might not come with a replacement lcd, may have to order separately.

don't buy used parts.

don't pull multiplugs out via the wires, always pull the plastic connector.

if the laptop has a hinge locking mechanism on the lid then don't forget how it goes back together and don't loose any springs or small pieces.

Yes,
i've done a couple of Lenovos.
I would have been a lot less confident without the detailed maintenance manuals which Lenovo provide.
However, having done that now, I think that most laptops are very similar, and if you take it slow, document what steps you take, which screws go where, so you can retrace your steps, you should be OK.

with some laptops it's not obvious how the pieces come apart. Most have some sort of clip on plastic pieces. The problem is figuring out which pieces are supposed to unclip, and which are going to be broken if you force them.
This is whaere a maintenance manual is invaluable.

Still... what have you got to lose?
Good luck.

Yea they are fairly easy mate... Remove the rubber gromits and undo the 4 screws in the corners and pull apart the plastic from the inner edge of the screen (not outer edge) and give a firm pull and it will release. You will then have up to 8 screws to release the screen and possible invertor to unplug (some makes have invertor build in the screen) ang you will have another lead plugged into the screen at the back. You can also take pictures as you go along so you remember how to put it back together. I am a laptop engineer so if you would like any help over the phone then PM me and i will give you my number. Hopes this helps

Piece of piss for anyone who can follow simple instructions, loads of ebay dealers and web based retailers have "how to do it" videos on youtube that you can follow step by step.Just check out the one for your model.
The hardest bit of it is remembering which screws you took out of what hole.If you need special screwdrivers Maplin will sell a set for about a tenner that can undo anything from a mobile to a PS3.

Not done it myself but had one changed at georgios Internet cafe on western road near waitrose. If memory serve it was about £120 and they did a great job.

wouldn't knock it but I have done 2. £56 and £72 for a widescreen.Saved money and got a smug "look at me,what a clever boy"feeling for free.
