Coming out of the pictures last night, just having seen Nicolas Cage's latest film, I overheard a bloke telling some people who were just about to go in, that this picture was brilliant - the film of the year so far.

I hope they enjoyed it and are not out looking for that bloke this morning.

It is amazing what they can do with special effects these days. Some of the scenes in this film were amazing and I thought the first three quarters of the film was pretty good, but the ending was eye wateringly dreadful in my opinion. The flow of the story was also full of holes as they jumped from one location to the next with little obvious connection.

But the most disappointing thing is that with all the modern CGI techniques, how come they still can't make Cage look like an actor?

I did enjoy the film much more than I thought I would. I liked the themes and the idea of fate v chance, god v science. But this isso not the sort of film Nic Cage should be in. He should stick to films like The Rock or Con Air.

Glad to hear someone is of the same opinion,

Was very disappointed with this film looked great on the trailer, but as you say ending was dire, and no explanation as to why the note was even written, as i saw it weren’t necessary

'ANY film starring Nicholas Cage should be given a very wide berth.' Those exact words are written into the American Constitution and should be adhered to at ALL times. Ignore them and you've only got yourself to blame for wasting $8/£8.

The aliens/angels sent it as a warning. That was mentioned towards the end.

Not entirely sure why they were warning of something inevitable. I presume it was to protect the people they wanted to save, so they knew not to be near these places at these times.

Or it could have been more about who they would pick - people who were receptive to their message were to be saved.

i heard it was painfully crap, with increasing layers of incredulity building to a farce ending.

I think films like this, ones that set out to cover spiritual or existential themes will always tread a fine line, and will split opinion.

They can be low key and wordy, which will bore some viewers.
They can be preachy or one sided which some people will resent the film for.
They can be patronising, they can be simplistic, they can be pretentious, they can be just plain silly.

There is a balance to strike between so many aspects of the film, which is hard enough on it's own, but that balance point is different for all viewers, making it even harder. What some may see as an excellent film, others may see as too patronising etc.
