[h=3]Knight tips Poyet for top job[/h]9:30am Wednesday 27th March 2013 in Albion By Andy Naylor
Gus Poyet was targeted by Reading
Albion president Dick Knight believes boss Gus Poyet is “made for a bigger club than Reading.”
And he hopes that club could be the Seagulls if Poyet steers them into the Premier League.
Reading have appointed ex-Southampton chief Nigel Adkins after Russian owner Anton Zingarevich unsuccessfully targeted Poyet last week.
Knight told The Argus: “Reading isn’t the club for Gus. I know John Madejski very well and he said to me a year ago ‘You have got a very good manager there’.
“I knew they would always be interested in him from that point, because John is still the chairman, so it didn’t surprise me that Reading were linked with him.
“But I think Gus is made for a bigger club than Reading and, who knows, that club could be Brighton.
“Gus is very ambitious and certainly in my view good enough to manage in the Premiership or, indeed, La Liga or Serie A. I would always have thought him to be a top end Premiership club manager and if he takes us to the Premiership his credentials are even more endorsed.”
Knight lost Albion manager Steve Coppell to Reading when he was chairman of the Seagulls at Withdean but was confident his successor Tony Bloom would not suffer the same fate with Poyet.
He said: “I didn’t really think a move to Reading was really on the cards unless they change their track record on investing in players as far as the Premiership is concerned.
“After all, they had the opportunity, not so much in the close season but in January, to strengthen the squad. I think Brian McDermott did a tremendous job there but he wasn’t supported in terms of bringing players in to give them a fighting chance to avoid relegation.
“They are odds on now to be relegated and I cannot see that would be a positive move for Gus.
“We, in many respects, are following Reading’s path. We are very much on the up and Gus is largely responsible for it. I think he will eventually leave us, because he is an ambitious man and he has got the track record and credentials to manage at the top level in my opinion, but I am really pleased he is staying and I hope he can take us to the Premiership.”
