Nah!! England and Wales will still be bigger together than Scotland and therefore the greatest part of Great Britain.
Yes, the whole island is Great Britain so a little awkward to use.
We would probably use United Kingdom more, i.e England, Wales and Northern Ireland united.

I think it is making fun of the poor English in the highlighted quote from someone who is supposed to be a professional writer, something that appears to have either been missed or ignored by the first few responses.

Though, of course that ignores the possibility that it's an error in copy/editing, not from the journalist themselves
