Somebody in the pub at Reading said he was not in the squad because he has the shits again. Is that true?

That's one way of putting it. Colitis is the technical term but I think you have the symptoms about right - big story in the Sports Argus.

The shame is there doesn't seem a cure and it's the last thing this particular player needs.

What is Colitis?
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of the colon and rectum. Ulcerative colitis may involve a larger portion of colon or even the entire colon. The rectum is almost always inflamed at the onset of this illness. Also, colitis is continuous and not patchy-(in laymen terms)-It stays where it is and doesn't manifest itself in one place then another. If its located in the rectum, then thats where it will stay. If it is the rectum and sigmoid colon which is infected, then only these two places will contain the disease.

Please note that these could be offensive. View at your own judgement.

Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis
In no particular order:
1. Softening of the stools(poop)
2. Urgency to move you bowels
3. Blood in the stool
4. Abdominal pain
5. Anemia
6. Weight loss
7. Joint pain
8. Eye and skin ailments
*Though this is not mentioned in books about this disease, I feel it is important to include:
9. Minor depression
10. Lack of motivation
11. Social isolation

Thank you and I agree, it is the last thing that he needs. I had hoped to see him get a run in the first team.:nono:

I feel really sorry for him.

Bleeding from the bowel and the pain are terrible. He must be really suffering apart from the fact that he cannot play.

Quite often the only way to control it is to stop eating altogether, be admitted to hospital for a few days and just lay there with a saline drip keeping your body hydrated whilst the bowel settles down.
