FWIW to you lot, Joe Gatting’s career as a professional footballer passed away quietly on Saturday at Hemel Hempstead in the FA Trophy (Woking won 1-0; thanks for asking). He is now technically back with you.

One goal from open play in around seventeen appearances: too slow, not big enough, wonky radar, no heart.

Good luck in whatever you end up doing for a living, Joe.

I'm sure Mark Mcghee can find a space for him

Hmmm...yes, that does sound fairly familiar. Although I thought he was big enough, he never really put himself about or used that physique to his advantage. He won't get a look-in here, time to ship him out to Eastbourne or Bognor I'd have thought.

He showed glimpses of being useful last season but that was it. Didn't show enough to suggest that he could be useful over the whole season.

Going against the perceived opinions on here, I thought he was slow yes but he held the ball up better than most of our recent forwards and maybe is not a player for teams that hoof it up the field.

Only saw him once in the youth team, against Chelsea, and he was one of our better players but he was very big in comparison to the others. When I saw him in the 1st team that advantage had gone and he did seem a bit pedestrian but some of the criticism of him on here seems a little ott.

One goal in 17 appearances in non league does seem quite shit though.

I've never rated him. Had a few spats on here about it in the past, but I've just never seen anything in him that convinced me he could ever cut it as a professional footballer at this level. Sure he's scored a couple of tap-ins for us, but frankly half the time he's barely looked interested to me, and thats got to be the minimum requirement surely. Any other young player getting his break in the first team busts a gut to do well, but Gatting seemed so laid back he was just going through the motions. Maybe thats just his style, but it did nothing for me. And if he can't cut it at Woking, he's not gonna make it anywhere in the football league.

Thing is of all the attacking players that have come through, he is one of the few that seems to be capable of getting into position to score the tap ins.

Take Robinson on Saturday, he scored a very good goal, but he also missed too far easier chances prior to that.

Robinson has been frustrating in terms of his goal return, for sure. But I'd never put that down to a lack of effort or desire on his part, and when he IS on song, his pace is a real asset to the team and he does cause problems.

Contrary to what Icy was saying, I don't think Gatting holds the ball up particularly well - he often seems to get bullied off the ball and just doesn't show the guts and determination needed to lead the line. I can forgive a players limited ability if the player makes up for it through sheer workrate and desire (Revell ?) - but I'm sorry, I just don't see that from Gatting.

Gatting is a better footballer than Nathan Elder.

Similar kind of players, but Gatting has at least shown signs of a knack of finding the net. He scored 5 goals in about 15 appearances for the first team last year. 1 in 3. [That's basically Nicky Forsters career ratio].

Still too early to call time on Joe Gatting, despite what failed to happen at Woking.

Are we expecting Gatting to come back and be as good as Hammond? If that is the case then we are truely f***ed. We had better get a few more goalies in to cope with the back passes.

Each to their own, as long as Mayo is not in the side, all is well.

However I would say it is too early to write Gatting off, he has shown glimpses that he might make it, he is better than most of the youngsters in the area, however he does not produce regularly.

UB, you know I am just having an opinion! And you're right, he has shown glimpses, I just want him to prove it consistantly. He is regularly impressive for the reserves (before going on loan) and was great with the youths. Just hope if he does come back that he is able to prove it as an adult. It would be great to have so many attack minded players competing for places.
