I think from what I have seen of him - live and otherwise, he looks quite unfit and rusty, which is understandable, so perhaps there is nothing sinister in it. Coupled with the fact that reserve football is an absolute right off, probably does not help players get back into the swing of things.

Is Painter better though ? I just think that Gus doesnt really rate Jim

Painter has been better at LB than McNulty of late, unfortunately. Jimmy has never looked the same since he has come back really, and I can't help but feel this season is going to be a write off and that if anything he needs a good pre season to ramp him up into a new season

I think it's going to take time for JM to get back to his best, Painter is a more than useful replacement, who will improve for having a winger in front of him.

Was well impressed with Painter tonight. Deserved his place although ironically he ran out of steam big time towards the end and they nearly exploited this!

Jimmy has a long road to recovery as it was a huge injury, hopefully next season will be better for him.

Jimmy is not being rested or eased back in. Just not being picked.

I cannot accept he is not in our best 20 players (18 last night, El Abd who failed a fitness test and Forster who is dropped).

The thing with Jim McNulty is that (1) he's still rusty and on the comeback trail (2) he's just not as good as Painter at LB at the moment and (3) he can't really play anywhere else. I'm sure he'll be back but I think it will be a while

Think he needs a loan out to get some games and come back next season showing what he can do

Gus seemed to suggest in his interview the other day that as soon as Elphick or Virgo "slips up", Tunnicliffe will be back in.

Also, re: McNulty - when fit and in form of course he is one of our best 20 players. Unfortunately he doesn't look 100% and is not in form. Painter has been doing a very solid job. No need to panic.
