Can't believe this happened 59 years ago today.

I was at a friends birthday party playing with dinky cars under a table when we were told
playing with my toy soldiers.... i was 6 at the time. I guess i could detect the sombre tone . I know my elder sister had a poster of him up on the wall , very strange in some ways but I guess he was a symbol of the good modern times ahead.

Definitely a "where were you when..". Aged 14, I had just left Whitehawk boys club and was getting a bag of chips in Whitehawk Road.

My grandma cried this morning as she does every morning of the anniversary. She was privileged to meet him once she told me, and in her eyes he was the greatest person to ever have lived. I'm not one for conspiracy theories, just gonna say still a tragic thing that happened.

I was at a Prep school near St Leonards On Sea and remember the headmaster coming into the prep room and saying “The President of the United States has been assassinated. It wasn’t long after we were told in assembly that we might all die in a nuclear war during the Cuban missile crisis. They didn’t hide things from young kids at school in those days :lolol:

Apart from being told Elvis had died and when Princess Diana died those two events are the only other “I remember where I was” moments for me.

I wonder what kind of a world we’d live in today if JFK, Martin Luther-King and Bobby Kennedy hadn’t been murdered?

Would the Vietnam War have happened for starters?

And would the Kennedy’s have had an unprecedented 6 straights terms in the White House with JFK, Bobby and Ted?

The Vietnam war had already started - some years before, in fact - Kennedy was sending more and more military assistance, even if he'd stopped short of actual troops. There's no way that he wouldn't have reacted as LBJ did.

The JFK assassination is the first news memory that I had. I didn't hear about it that evening but at breakfast the next morning, my parents looked gobsmacked. Personally, I was more looking forward to a new TV series that evening, called Dr Who. I wonder who remembers that now

Was at my soon to be Mrs Oldman’s house with soon to be in laws. They were watching Take your pick with Michael Miles on itv. Sod this I thought knowing that my future Father in law was low on whisky I offered to pop up to the offie at Towns Corner (that’s Hangleton for those not in the know)
Came back to find all hell had broken loose as JFK had been killed.
Remember that night vividly.
