Lord Bracknell said:That photo isn't, of course, a random selection of Italian women. They are all supporting the Torre contrada at the Sienese palio.
Which means that THEY ALL LIVE WITHIN TWO HUNDRED YARDS OF EACH OTHER
Now walk around your neighbourhood for ten minutes.

shingle said:As LB says they are girls from the Torre Contrada, one of of 17 contradas ( or districts ) in the old walled city of Siena in Italy. Twice a year on July 2nd and August 16nth, there is a horse race and ten of these contradas race against each other, as Afters says, in a race lasting about 90 secs( its actually 3 times around the main square). Each of these contradas has an ancient name, colours and constitution. These girls are from the Torre contrada(seen by their purple scarves) and are cheering on their horse and jockey in one of six trial races that take place during the 4 days of palio.
It comes from having spent fifteen months living in Montalcino, which (as I'm sure you will know) is always represented in the Palio procession.shingle said:I'm even more impressed LB by your knowledge of the various feuds between the contradas.
