IT advice (sorry!) - where to buy processors?

Hi guys, was doing some yearly maintenance to my beloved 2008 gaming laptop (Gateway P-6860fx) which currently is stock spec;

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5550, 2 MB L2 Cache | 1.83 GHz | 667 MHz FSB
4096 MB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2 × 2048)
NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800M GTS (+ 512mb ddr3)
320 GB 5400 RPM SATA hard drive

Framerates are dropping on tested games (from 50-60fps to 25/30fps mostly) and CPU core temps are rising (despite replacing the stock thermal compound with AS5 on both the heatsink, CPU and GPU and thoroughly air dusting) - apparently a problem with the older tech they used to keep costs down

The processor has always been the weak link for the spec so I'm looking to take it from mid range and do my first processor upgrade, to either a T9300, T9500, X7800, X7900 or X9000 depending on the bang to buck.

Problem; I don't like buying off Ebay, not least something like this which could easily be an engineering sample or used.

Can anyone recommend the best value, best service experience for to purchase the component? I am able to install it myself.

I've done the highstreet, PC World (never again) just looked at me blankly when I asked, and asked if I wanted to buy a new laptop. And that was the specialist tech guy.

Thanks

i didnt think you could change mobile CPUs, but a quick look on dabs.com shows a few. but no better than what you have i think. Overclockers UK has a p9500 for £300 :eek:

electronic components dont wear and get slower, so i'd look elsewhere for the FPS issues. my favorite is to defrag as an old machin can be massivly fragmented and that has serious impact on performance.

Go for a clean build, wipe the PC totally, and then go for W7 upgrade as the OS.

overclockers.co.uk if you want faster delivery (sometimes cheaper than ebuyer too) but i've never had problems with ebuyer before :thumbsup:
