You are basically paying for some of it even if you don't win it.

At 50p a bid, and bids going up at 7p a time, they are making their money. For example there is currently £500 cash going. For some bizarre reason bidding is currently at £506.31 that means there have been 7232 bids. So they have made £3616.50 on the deal. So even though you may get an item cheap, they do not lose money on the deal.
