Is this Australian KFC cricket advert racist?

This KFC advert recently released has caused outrage by most americans recently, the advert itself is a white australian man in the west indies block, and in order to ease his awkward situation gives around a KFC bucket to the supporters, looking at the camera saying "too easy".

First and foremost most of the complaints have been coming from Americans (most of them have the understanding of cricket as that of a dead ferret), are complaining this is racist because he is surrounded by black people, and they say this is also racist as it is saying black people just eat KFC, Most Australians don't think this is the case. I agree with the ozzies and I think it would be more awkward if you were surrounded by the oppositions supporters. This could easily be done exactly the same with English fans and the Australian being surrounded by the barmy army.

I don't want to go into your views on racism and such, this is more about would you consider this advert to be racist?

Why would Americans be outraged by an Australian TV ad?

Blacks eating Fried Chicken is a stereotype in the US...thats why they "think" this advert is being racist when the gist of the ad is to say "hey a Family Bucket gets you friends anywhere in any situation...TOO EASY!"

get it?

I wouldn't call it racist but I can see why many would. It's very Australian, is what it is.

Oh, don't worry, I'm not a RETARD. What I meant was, why were Americans even watching an Australian TV ad in the first place?

All a load of bollocks, black Americans have nothing in common with West Indians culturally (as in they wouldn't be associated with Southern Fried Chicken) except for the obvious and as has been stated KFC are a cricket sponsor.

I hope the same advert with the bloke surrounded by the Barmy Army will be shown when the Ashes are on so the Brits can get all huffy about being stereotyped as junk food consuming chavs:tantrum:

It's about as racist as showing an Englishman drinking a cup of tea, a Chinese man eating rice, a German man eating a sausage, or a Scotsman lying blind drunk in the gutter, with a half-eaten, deepfriend mars bar in is hand.

It's not even that. It's like showing a Dutch man eating a deep-fried Mars Bar, and then the French getting upset and hand-wringing because it tars all Europeans as loving deep-friend Mars Bars when in fact it's just a few Scots.

I make you right.

Where I live there is a large black community and there are frequently queues out the door of the local KFC and various other chicken places and it is just a fact that the people are mostly of one rpersuasion. Doesn't make them bad people and doean't make me a bad person for saying it.

Of course it isn't. It's about Australians and West Indians. How the f*** do the Americans think it relates to them? Self-centred idiots.

It is about Australians and West Indians, what it says is that the Aussie wants to make friends with his fellow Commonwealth citizens, namely the West Indians...he extends the hand of friendship, in the form of some food that he knows they will enjoy, it is gladly and gracefully accepted...job done!

Would I be offended if the West Indians were replaced with Englishmen and he was handing out pints of bitter and steak & kidney pies...often associated with us...no I wouldn't.

I'd never heard of the fried chicken stereotype until watching Me, myself and Irene, so on my recent trip to the states I thought I'd take a little notice.

For purely scientific reasons I ate in Ihop, TGI Friday, Johnny Rockets, a big food hall in Universal Studios, Buba Gumps (where we all had shrimp but that's all I got to say about that) A chinese wok place in a shopping mall, Arbies and Ci Ci's Pizza (which is disgusting but it included a round of mini golf in the deal up some mountain thing). I also passed a few KFC's, Chick a fila's etc.

Results: I didn't notice a higher proportion of black people in any of the establishments other than Arbies where there were none. In fact there weren't many people at all in there. My son then told me that Homer Simpson (I think) once said 'I'm so hungry I could eat at Arbies'.

Conclusion: I dunno, maybe we're all pretty much the same and more or less eat the same stuff as everybody else. I did put on over half a stone though.

I'd agree with your conclusion on the whole, but for whatever reason a section of the black community, whether they're west indian or not, seems to favour the fried chicken. I know a black girl who is very, very fussy about food and where she eats. She usually complains about something whenever we go out as a group, but she will eat fried chicken anywhere and we do so love to mock her for it!

And I remember that quote from Homer and now it makes a lot more sense - so cheers!

It is as racist as Robinsons golliwog marmalade, dont underestimate the level of slavish devotion to American racial politics the British left has, if it isn't racist it soon will be.
