Is it possible to find out what variant you have?

Apologies if this has been asked before but is there a way to find out what strain of the virus you have?

I tested positive last week and I assume I have Omicron as a) it appears to be all I hear about on the news and b) it's really not that bad......for me anyway.

Given the government are announcing Omicron numbers I'm assuming they are testing for this during the PCR? Is there a way as an individual I can find out what I tested positive for?

Knowing is of no use to me whatsoever I'm simply curious.

Tried googling and found this: https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20210914/covid-strain-unknown-to-patients but that is US focused.

Your best chance is probably by identifying your own symptoms and then looking at what scientists or doctors are finding as the main symptoms for each variant.

I’ve got Covid now. My symptoms are "…much more like the common cold, starting with a sore throat, runny nose and a headache….”.

I would be shocked if I’ve got Delta, must be Omicron. My smell and taste have remained pretty pretty good too.

We PCR tested positive on 12th and 14th Dec, at the Regen Clinic 5 Ways.

I emailed them out of interest on whether we had had Omicron.

They took the time to email back to say they weren’t going to let clients know the variant found.

They do know, if it’s a variant of interest they pass on the data to the authorities. But it’s between them.

Similarly, the NHS PCR testing sites in places such as Preston Park, never let punters know the variant.

There is a Govt website where you can track the Omicron cases - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-omicron-daily-overview

The latest data is:

This shows that in England yesterday Omicron cases went up by 16k. But there is a larger total of SGTF cases which went up by 38k. I don't know what that stands for but I think it might be cases where Omicron not confirmed but no other variant present so process of elimination it is Omicron. Added together gives you 54k which is still not 50% of the daily cases.

S Gene Target Failure - I think you’re correct in that it basically doesn’t confirm Omicron absolutely but eliminates Delta ? Seems as though a number of Labs aren’t yet doing the sequencing to identify it though so not clear how accurate the data will be.

Attached is interesting (from a learning perspective)
