Lewes council leader Ann de Vecchi claims that January 12th is too soon as their consultants and legal reps wont be free by then, so the inquiry should be postponed.

I wish I was retired because I would withold some of my council tax and get into the papers as a pensioner Gran fighting for Falmer

With any luck after the leaflet drop at the Lewes game today, they will get a lot more letters / emails asking why they are spending Council Money on something that as nothing to do with them.

I understand that the District Council's Cabinet is meeting today to discuss, among other matters, the possibility that the Council will earmark a further £35,000 to fight Brighton and Hove Albion's plans for a community stadium on land near Brighton University.
As a Lewes council tax payer, I wi understand that the District Council's Cabinet is meeting today to discuss, among other matters, the possibility that the Council will earmark a further £35,000 to fight Brighton and Hove Albion's plans for a community stadium on land near Brighton University.
As a Lewes council tax payer, I wish you to know that I object very strongly to my council spending yet more money to oppose a stadium that is supported by very many residents of the district, including thousands who have signed a petition in favour of it.
Continuing opposition to a stadium near Falmer threatens the future of Brighton and Hove Albion football club and the interests of the very many people in Lewes District who follow the club's fortunes.
I urge you not to support this additional expenditure

Although finance is not my area of Cabinet responsibility, I will certainly check the accuracy of your point.
On the issue itself, as one of those who follows the club's fortunes, I ally myself firmly with the wise words of Norman Baker MP which have been widely reported. In summary, he and I do not believe the club has been best advised by aligning itself so closely with the city council of Brighton & Hove and its current and former leaders, nor do we believe that the site selection process was sufficiently transparent in the initial stages. That is why, in our opinion, the Deputy PM has re-opened the inquiry. As to the timing of that, Norman Baker has already been proved to be correct, despite the public pronouncements of others only a few weeks ago that it would be concluded by Christmas; it is a political device to delay a decision until after the anticipated date of the next General Election, and people may well speculate as to the reasons for that. Norman has also said that he will abide by the final decision, and if possible assist with the "healing process" whichever side "wins" - if I am in a position so to do, I shall too.

In the next few months a resumed Public Inquiry will examine other “potential” sites against a list of specific criteria before the Deputy Prime Minister gives his final verdict.
While the delay is very frustrating, we believe the process will prove once and for all that our original assessment was correct and there is only one site in Brighton for a new stadium that will meet Government criteria – Falmer.
The Albion will have to spend many more thousands of pounds on gathering evidence, presenting expert witnesses, legal representation, etc. – in addition to the £2.5 million we have already spent on the Falmer application and original Inquiry.
Our opponents, led by Lewes District Council, will be committing further significant sums of public money towards representation at the Inquiry. We know that they are currently gathering together a team of experts to try and challenge evidence submitted by our team on sites none of which are in the Lewes area. As a resident of Lewes District (which also includes Ringmer, Seaford, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs) you might well resent this use of Council taxpayers’ money. And you won’t be alone, because almost 5,000 of your fellow residents signed the Falmer For All petition compared to under 1,000 who signed the petition against the stadium, a ratio of 5:1!
If you are unhappy with this situation, we recommend that you contact your councillor(s) on Lewes District Council straightaway. I have attached details of names and addresses of all the councillors. Wards have one, two or three councillors. If you are not sure in which Ward you live then contact Lewes District Council on (01273) 471600.
We also recommend that you write to Cllr Ann De Vecchi, Leader of the Council, and to John Crawford, Chief Executive. Both can be contacted at Lewes District Council, 32 High Street, Lewes BN7 2LX. And if you really want to get the message home, send a letter to the local newspaper: Sussex Express, 25 High Street, Lewes BN7 2LU.
Finally, please support the march to the Labour Party conference in Brighton on 27th September if you possibly can. Keep the faith – We will get our new stadium!
