... and I know bugger all about horse racing (or the gee gee's - i think I heard Del Boy call them that once).

So can anyone give me any advice on anything?

Also - would telling the staffer at the Tote booth that Keiron Fallon told me about a "sure thing", and tapping my nose conspiratorially, be sure fire way to get kicked out? What if I did it EVERY time?

Should I bet on winners, or are each way bets the way forward?

Help!

That's the general idea I think.

If the field is big look around for any outsiders that have shortening odds and smack an each way down i think. Betting on winners is for idiots unless it's nailed on or a hot tip.

Please bear in mind that i know dick all about Horse Racing.

my directors horse is being put forward if it rains tonight. he likes soft ground.

horse is called Sentry and is being ridden by frankie dettori should he be entered he is in good form at the moment. i had a punt on him before and did well.

best thing to do is register on racing post or something like that gives you form on all the horses entered for the races

Do a placepot, pick 2 horses in every race in a perm and then you with a bit of luck have a bit of interest in every race and hopefully a nice little pick up at the end.

Sounds good - but, whats a "perm"?

Is that like an accumulator over the day with 2 each ways in each race? How much is the bet gonna cost?

A crude but effective tip for first-timers at Ascot is to back Frankie Dettori on all his rides. He loves Ascot and won seven out of seven there a year or two back (they got a statue of him doing a flying dismount there to mark the occasion). The little bugger tends to win the first four races if they're televised, despite the form suggesting many other possible alternatives to back. not that I'm bitter or anything...

The only other tip is not to embarrass yourself like loads of first-timers at the races do by bellowing out at the parade ring 'Why does that board say L.DETTORI, I thought his name was Frankie?' You wouldn't believe the number of times I've heard that one.

Frankie is short for Lanfranco innit

I did see L Dettori on the website and think he had a brother or something. Now I can frown at the uneducated peasants who make the same error!

Ernest - good stuff. I think I'll go for that, but can possibly stretch a bit beyond 10p ... maybe. So, and this is how much of a novice I am, how do i ask for that?
