One of my favourite jokes in the Naked Gun films is “the doctors give him a 50% chance of living, but there’s only a 10% chance of that…”

An MP quoted in the Boris Johnson partygate evidence has said was "90% sure" the senior civil servant Simon Case agreed with Johnson during a meeting that all Covid rules had been obeyed.

Is 90% sure a case of being sure, or does that 10% mean she is not sure?
I voted 'not sure' before reading the context. Then smiled wryly.

Johnson is adroit at wordsmithery, and is an expert at making a lie sound like a reasonable and plausible explanation. It is a gift.

Why anyone would trust anyone like him with anything is a mystery. The Conservative, and editor of the Mail, Max Hastings, once stated that Johnson should not be trusted with one's wallet or one's wife. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/...ister-Im-plane-Britain-says-Max-Hastings.html

If you replace the word “sure” for the word “certain” it’s clearer.

Certain is an absolute but things can have degrees of certainty.

Similarly 90% sure is not “sure” but is 90% of the way there.

Either way Boris is lying out his arse
It was Johnson who conjured up the lexicographic wizardry.

I suspect he's really enjoying himself, avoiding outright lies by using misleading sentence constructions.

If he were not so lazy and venal he'd be a very effective politician. Instead his own party removed him from office. And yet....they are very likely to have him back, once he has been exonerated (which he will be).

What a guy.

Definitely unsure.
