Who knows what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would have made of it, but ITV and the BBC are squaring up with rival Sherlock Holmes dramas.
Hollywood star Rupert Everett will tackle the role of the fictional sleuth in the BBC1 production, with Ian Hart as his sidekick Dr John Watson. ITV1's version will see Stephen Fry as Holmes, with comedy partner Hugh Laurie playing Watson. Both are expected to air within months of each other.
Surely there's a part for Hawsey with those sideburns!
