Booked a table at the hungry monk for the wife and I. Anyone ever been? Hoping that the food justifys the £34 per head price tag. Apparently they invented banhoffi pie or summit. I hate paying big £££ for shit food though...

I have eaten there three times and thoroughly enjoyed the food. My sister worked there for a while and she is the best cook I have ever come across!

I would say that one is probably paying for the 'name', but I love it there.

Avoid the pub up the road, it's the dearest in Sussex.

I think my very first girlfriends sister was the person (or one of the staff) who invented Banoffe Pie. She was the head chef there many years ago and she wrote the book "The Hungry Monk at Work" a cookbook of the quite complex dishes I've never tried them cos they look a bit difficult. But it is supposed to be top notch, I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

I ate there once years ago, food was ok but the tables were so close to each other and the place so cramped I never went back. Hopefully it has changed now as paying top wack and being buffeted by waiters/waitresses trying to get past you and kicking your chair and struggling by is not what you'd expect from a quality restaurant. I also hate fecking sweet sickly banoffe pie.

I didn't realise the original was a pastry base. I must admit, when I make my own, I've always made the biscuit base. Also, my alternative version to coffee cream is to have brandy in the cream instead.

Reading those I now realise my exs sister couldn't have invented it as she didn't start working there till 1986.

The Hungry Monk is my wife and I's absolute favourite restaurant, expensive, so we only get there once a year, but for a romantic setting unbeatable, especially in winter when you can cuddle up together after the meal with a coffee, home-made chocolates or a glass of port in one of the many small back rooms, next to a real roaring log fire. If you are after loads of grub forget it but if you are after quality food in an intimate setting then you have found a jewel of a place - we try other places but always end up coming back to the Hungry Monk. Although you have quoted £34 a head you will end up spending £80-90 there by the end of the evening so be prepared.

Nah. The Eight Bells.

As expensive as the Plough and Harrow at Litlington? As for the Hungry Monk, my parents were taken there years ago by Mum's cousin and absolutely loved it, but I can't vouch for it now, as I've never been. If you are up in the Mid or North Sussex area, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Ockenden Manor at Cuckfield if you really want to push the boat out. Food, service and atmosphere were superb (we were being entertained by my brother and sister-in-law). No doubt someone on here will say they've had a bad experience there, but I was most impressed. I've tried most of the best places up here when entertained by bro and sis in law, but had a very bad experience at the Ashdown Park (I think there was a near riot in the kitchen!!), and have been less than impressed with the Gravetye's menu choice when we were taken there in the summer. Jeremy's at Borde Hill wasn't a patch on what I remembered it as when it was at the Crabtree at Lower Beeding.

we ate in the private room upstairs for no extra cost. if 6 or more well worth asking about.

Ditto. Booked the private room upstairs for my 40th birthday a couple of years ago, and it was superb.

It was a private dining room experience for my family and friends, but with all the service of the restaurant downstairs.

Highly recommended.

10/10.
